The developer who spearheaded the original 1997 CRPG Fallout and its 1998 sequel at Interplay Entertainment, Tim Cain, has stepped out of semi-retirement. He has now joined Obsidian Entertainment as a full-time employee. Unfortunately, he’s not working on a Fallout: New Vegas remake.
Tim Cain has a long list of credits in cult classics like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Cain signed up with Obsidian back in 2011 as a programmer, where he worked on South Park: The Stick of Truth, Pillars of Eternity, and Tyranny before he co-directed The Outer Worlds in 2019.
Now, he’s back on the front lines of game development with some exciting news. Tim Cain uploaded a nine-minute video on his YouTube channel where he talked about relocating to South Carolina and his new Moon Man tattoo, inspired by The Outer Worlds, before making the big announcement.
In the video, Cain said, “Things have changed. Lots of things, actually. I’m back at Obsidian. I’m there as a full-time employee, and in-person, so not remote. I’m not a contractor anymore. There’s at least one game that I’ve worked on that I know is going to ship,” referring to his days as a contractor.
Speculation is rife that Tim Cain, known for creating meticulous, choice-driven narratives, is working on an upcoming Fallout title. However, he was quick to temper speculation.
Cain said that he’s bound by an NDA, meaning he can offer only limited details about his current project. He simply said, “I also can’t talk about that project I’m working on at Obsidian, just because, you know, that’s covered under NDA.”
While many gamers have been guessing that a potential Fallout: New Vegas remake is in the works over at Obsidian, Tim said, “Don’t bother guessing, you’re not going to guess right.”
This revelation coincides with recent updates from Obsidian veterans, such as writer John Gonzalez, who stated on LinkedIn that Obsidian is returning to a project. Still, it’s not Fallout: New Vegas 2.
Speculation among gamers has shifted to a return to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, with many believing Obsidian is working on Pillars of Eternity 3. In contrast, others believe Tim Cain is working on Avowed 2, which is reportedly in development.
