Obsidian co-founder Chris Avellone said on X that the studio currently has no plans for The Outer Worlds 3 while reportedly moving forward with Avowed 2, a statement that arrives just weeks after The Outer Worlds 2’s release and amid ongoing post-launch support for the title.

Chris Avellone, the co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment and lead designer behind fan-favorite classics like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, The Sith Lords, and Fallout: New Vegas, dropped some interesting news on November 6, stating that The Outer Worlds 2 won’t be getting a sequel, but the cards are on the table for an Avowed sequel.

In a statement on X, Avellone, who left the studio in 2015, stated, “Apparently, aside from DLC plans for The Outer Worlds 2, it seems like Obsidian is making no plans for Outer Worlds 3 (but they are doing Avowed 2).”

It’s shocking timing considering The Outer Worlds 2 launched nearly two weeks ago on October 29 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series S|X. The Outer Worlds 2 received a generally favorable reception for its improved, expanded, and more freedom-of-choice gameplay compared to the 2019 original.

Players also saw the return of the Flaw system, a trade-off mechanic that punishes players with game-altering debuffs depending on their choices mid-playthrough.

Obsidian likely has its hands full with post-launch updates and DLC content for The Outer Worlds 2. However, the rumor that Obsidian might not be planning an Outer Worlds 3 should be taken with a grain of salt, considering the title was released recently and the developer is unlikely to talk about anything that could divert media attention from its current title.

For context, reports indicate that Obsidian follows a multi-team structure, with manpower and resources spread across multiple ongoing projects. So, it's too soon to say that The Outer Worlds 3 isn’t likely to happen.

On the other end of the spectrum, Avowed 2, based on the Pillars of Eternity series, reportedly being greenlit suggests that Obsidian has strong internal confidence about the title.

Avowed, released on February 18, 2025, for PC and Xbox Series S|X, received a Metacritic score of 80/100 based on 80 critic reviews and an Average user score of 6.8 based on 2,049 player reviews. Many gamers called Avowed an “OK RPG.” Players also pointed out that the game didn’t do much to stand out in the crowded genre of fantasy RPGs.

The game peaked at a concurrent player count of 19,198 on February 23, but gradually declined, hovering at a daily average of 200 on Steam. Microsoft gauged Avowed's success using Game Pass engagement, celebrating it as the second-most-played day one Game Pass launch of the year in early 2025, trailing behind Oblivion: Remastered.
