An update from Take Two Interactive as part of its earnings call confirmed that RDR2 has now effectively overtaken Mario Kart 8 as the 4th most sold game of all time.

As it stated that Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed once again to November 19, 2026, Take-Two Interactive also revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 had hit an impressive milestone in 2025. It has sold over 79 million units worldwide, making it the fourth-best-selling video game of all time and pushing the entire Red Dead Redemption series past 106 million lifetime sales.

This news comes from Take-Two Interactive’s Q2 fiscal 2026 earnings call. Red Dead Redemption 2 has pushed past Mario Kart 8’s estimated 78.02 million sales, PUBG’s 75 million, Oregon Trail's 65 million, Terraria’s 64 million, The Witcher 3’s 60 million, and the original 1985 Super Mario Bros.' 58 million sales.

To put things into perspective, the best-selling video game of all time is Minecraft, with 350 million copies sold worldwide; Grand Theft Auto V is second with 220 million sales; and Wii Sports is third with 82.9 million sales.

By May 2020, over a year into the game’s launch, Red Dead Redemption 2 had sold 31 million units. Take-Two consistently updated the game’s sales. By December 2023, Red Dead had sold an additional 30 million units, bringing total sales to 61 million. By February 2025, Rockstar’s flagship title had sold 9 million more units, and an additional 9 million as of November 2025.

It’s a pretty remarkable record for Rockstar, considering Red Dead Redemption 2 launched almost seven years ago in October 2018. Still, Rockstar’s gunslinging Western open-world epic has managed to stay relevant despite multiple high-profile releases coming out in recent years like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur’s Gate 3, and more.

Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to defy industry expectations, even as Red Dead Online remains bundled with every copy, despite being offered as a standalone release as early as 2020.

Rockstar wrapped up Red Dead Online, ending support on July 7, 2022. However, the studio shadow-dropped a DLC titled Strange Tales of the West on July 1, 2025, adding four new Telegram missions.

With GTA VI’s development nearing its end as Rockstar Games will reportedly release it in November next year, many fans are wondering if Red Dead Redemption 3 is next on Rockstar’s menu.

Arthur Morgan’s voice actor, Roger Clark, spoke in an interview in 2023 regarding Red Dead Redemption’s future: “I’m certain we will see Red Dead Redemption 3 one day. When that will be – I have absolutely no idea.”

In another interview, Clark said, “Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, said it himself. He said GTA and Red Dead are prominent franchises for Rockstar Games and that they will be returning to them in the future.”
