In a GQ interview, Bethesda director Todd Howard said the studio “has hundreds of people on Fallout right now,” a remark that has brought reports, including prior Microsoft legal leaks and recent leaker claims that a Fallout 3 remaster may be underway, into focus yet again.

After recent comments by Bethesda Game Studios director, Todd Howard, in an interview with GQ, rumors of a potential Fallout 3 remaster have started circulating on the internet. Todd Howard stated that the studio has “hundreds of people on Fallout right now, with 76 and some other things we’re doing.”

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Fallout 4, Todd Howard spoke with GQ Magazine and vaguely suggested that the studio was working on “some other things,” which VGC reported is Fallout 3 Remastered.

During the interview, Todd Howard openly admitted that the studio was working on The Elder Scrolls 6 every day, confirming that it’s “still a long way off,” but remained tight-lipped about other ongoing projects. The only remarks he made about Fallout 3 were that the game “has the best opening” out of any game he’s worked on, and that it “has a very harsh tone.”

He talked about the Fallout series’ enduring appeal, stating, “Fallout is great because it can be a gonzo B-movie one moment and then it can be life-or-death trauma. It’s what we spent a lot of time getting right on the TV show. I think the best quest is one with the characters you meet: what have they done to survive, and why? How do you feel about that?”

Bethesda may shadow-drop Fallout 3 Remastered, similar to their take on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which was announced and released on April 22, 2025, during a livestream. Todd Howard described Oblivion Remastered’s shadow-drop as a “test run” that “worked out well.”

Earlier leaks align with an upcoming Fallout 3 remaster release. Microsoft’s legal documents were leaked in 2023 during the FTC antitrust case against the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The documents detailed plans for a Fallout 3 remaster alongside The Elder Scrolls 6.

In April 2025, NateTheHate confirmed the project’s existence, though he reiterated that Fallout 3 Remastered is “a long way from release.”

However, the Fallout fandom is concerned about optimization issues as seen in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and whether Bethesda’s use of Unreal Engine 5 will alter the essence and charm of the original Fallout 3.
