Every sector of the tech market will feel the effects of COVID-19, according to a new report
GlobalData has announced a revised edition of its Tech, Media & Telecom Trends report for 2020. Its general message is that all electronics-related business stands to suffer as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic for its duration. For example, IT services are projected to have a "bad year", despite a short-term surge in certain areas such as cloud and collaboration facilities.
Specific companies are also likely to be hit by the ongoing public health crisis. They include Apple, which, as GlobalData points out, sites 90% of its fabrication in China (the original COVID-19 Ground Zero) and derives 18% of its revenues from the same country. The new report's consumer electronics thematic scoring shows that this OEM has fallen from #4 to #14 in the resultant rankings.
Google's Alphabet parent has managed to take the #1 slot in the same, however. Then again, it may not be all bad news for tech in 2020: certain device and service classes such as UAVs and 3D printing are reportedly filling vital roles in the areas of healthcare delivery and isolation maintenance in several countries at this time.
Furthermore, the role of phones, PCs, telecomms equipment and other hardware that enables millions to work from home these days should not be under-estimated or taken for granted either.
