EE to bring Qualcomm-powered Wi-Fi 7 to UK home broadband market
Qualcomm has rounded its Wi-Fi Day out with the announcement of a new partnership with EE to bring potentially early-access Wi-Fi 7 "to consumers across the UK". It will be conferred by the carrier's upcoming hardware upgrade.
Currently, EE's most up-to-date in-home device, the Smart Hub Plus, supports Wi-Fi 6. However, its successor is touted to get faster speeds thanks to its upgrade to the new tri-band standard. Qualcomm asserts that its connectivity will be smoother and more stable thanks to up-to-320MHz channel bandwidth (as opposed to 160MHz for Wi-Fi 6E) and MLO.
Accordingly, EE's customers might stand to gain higher-performance, higher-bandwidth wireless internet that might be better able to support the demands of high-res streaming, cloud gaming or "immersive" virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR).
Higher-capacity broadband might also come in handy as the number of Wi-Fi-connected devices per home is projected to double over the next 5 years - just in time for EE's Wi-Fi 7-capable service 2024 roll-out.
