E-bike security: Ananda R525 motor locks the wheel during theft attempts

E-bikes are often major investments, making them prime targets for theft. While digital safeguards exist, thieves can still profit by harvesting and reselling individual components. To counter this, drive manufacturer Ananda has introduced the R525, a hub motor equipped with integrated anti-theft protection. It is worth addressing the obvious caveat immediately: the system can only lock the wheel, meaning thieves can still physically carry the bike away. Consequently, this feature is best suited for brief, low-risk stops—such as popping into a bakery—rather than overnight street parking.

The protection mechanism relies on electronic engagement. Once locked via the display or companion app, any attempt to move the bike triggers significant electromagnetic resistance within the motor, immobilizing the rear wheel. To eliminate safety hazards, patented control logic ensures the system never engages accidentally while riding.

Tipping the scales at 4.2 kg (9.26 lbs), the R525 clearly prioritizes structural durability over weight savings. Ananda plans to offer the motor in two configurations. The EU-compliant version delivers a rated continuous power output of 250 W and up to 42 Nm of torque on a 36 V system. A higher-output 350 W variant operates at 48 V and provides up to 50 Nm of torque. As is standard for component releases, the launch of the motor itself does not come with immediate commercial e-bike announcements, as adoption remains at the discretion of individual bicycle manufacturers. Ananda envisions the R525 primarily powering urban and city e-bikes.
