Foldable smartphone US$ 500 cheaper—Is Motorola’s Razr Fold worth it?

The Razr Fold has already dropped significantly in price—but then again, the manufacturer’s price was very high to begin with.
The Razr Fold has already dropped significantly in price—but then again, the manufacturer’s price was very high to begin with.
Motorola is asking nearly US$ 1.900 for the Razr Fold, but it’s already available for significantly less from online retailers. But does that really make Motorola’s first full-size foldable a bargain?

The Razr Fold is Motorola’s first clamshell smartphone and quite expensive: the manufacturer’s website lists the price at US$ 1,899. However, at the time of this review, the Razr Fold is already available from online retailers such as ebay.com for around US$ 1,500 —a discount of about one fourth off the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 starts at around US$ 1,499. Thus, despite its reduced market price, the Razr Fold is not the most affordable device in its class.

Strategic price drop right from the start

It’s unusual in the industry for a newly launched foldable phone to see such a massive price drop so soon after its launch. Normally, manufacturers maintain the suggested retail price for at least a few months. In Motorola’s case, the rapid price drop points to an aggressive market strategy.

A user who purchases the device through online retailers saves significantly compared to the official price—though it remains unclear how long the reduced price will last.

Not unmatched in comparison

The Galaxy Z Fold7 is priced lower than the Razr Fold. In Notebookcheck’s overall rating, however, Samsung’s foldable scores slightly higher at 87.2 percent (Razr Fold: 85.8 percent). For buyers, this means the price decision comes down to the details.

Those looking for longer battery life and higher display brightness are better off with the Razr Fold. Those who prioritize lighter weight and a higher overall score should go with the Samsung.

Tester’s conclusion: Attractive due to price drop

The reduced price can make the device an attractive choice. At the same time, our in-depth review shows that the Razr Fold sets new standards in only a few areas.
