It has been 20 years since the original Unreal first-person shooter appeared on PCs around the world. The classic game was released on May 22, 1998, and it spawned a whole franchise of best-selling titles. To celebrate Unreal’s birthday, both GOG and Steam are offering the game as a free download for a limited time.

The first-person shooter Unreal was revealed to the world on May 22, 1998, and since then it has become something of a legend in gaming circles. Powered by the now famous Unreal Engine, gamers had to take on the role of Prisoner 849 and defeat legions of Skaarj warriors whilst exploring the planet Na Pali. The game was developed by Epic MegaGames, Digital Extremes, and Legend Entertainment and it was published by GT Interactive.

To celebrate Unreal reaching its 20th birthday, it is being given away as a gift on GOG and Steam. However, the free offer is for a limited time only: GOG is running the deal for the next 48 hours (ending on May 24). Epic Games (the company dropped the “Mega” in 1999) is probably best known currently for the smash hit Fortnite Battle Royale. However, the company has not forgotten Unreal and has been working on Unreal Tournament, which is currently open for pre-alpha participants to test out.

The Unreal Gold download also includes the expansion: Return to Na Pali. Get it for free before Prisoner 849’s time runs out! System requirements include 1 GHz processor (1.4 GHz recommended) and 256 MB RAM (512 MB recommended).
