A new weapon has been revealed as part of the latest patch for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), but it seems not even original content can help Bluehole’s game in the battle royale war against Fortnite. According to analysts, the title from Epic Games made over five times as much as PUBG in first week cumulative iOS revenue.

The latest patch for PUBG has gone live, and it includes new weaponry in the form of the SLR (self-loading rifle). Developers at Bluehole have been busy with the PC 1.0 Update #12 and also included a new vehicle, new attachments, map selection, and a number of balance changes to weapons. Generally speaking, pistols and some submachine guns have been buffed while most of the automatic rifles and two of the shotguns have been nerfed.

No doubt hardcore PUBG fans will likely be pleased with the amount of effort Bluehole has put into the huge new patch, but the game is still struggling to keep up with the fierce rival from Epic Games. According to research carried out by Sensor Tower, Fortnite earned an estimated US$3.7 million in its first seven days of availability on iOS in all countries outside of China. Apparently, PUBG Mobile only managed US$700,000 within the same conditions (first week, Apple’s platform, outside China).

The report continues with speculation that Fortnite’s success on the PC and console platforms and Epic Games’ use of a store rather than loot boxes both contribute to the game's ability to remain ahead of PUBG in business terms. It is likely that Fortnite's new superhero-themed Season 4 will help Epic's title retain its current position of battle royale top dog.
