A father-and-son team of DIY engineers and YouTubers — Mike Bell and Luke Maximo Bell — have, in collaboration with the Dubai Police, broken the Guinness World Record for the fastest ground speed by a battery-powered, remote-controlled quadcopter with a top speed of 580 km/h (360.4 mph).
Just a few weeks ago, the engineers shared videos on their YouTube channels showcasing Peregreen 3 — a quadcopter that they used to break the unofficial record for the fastest drone with a top speed of 585 km/h (363.5 mph). Now the duo has set an official record using the drone in collaboration with the Dubai Police.
To break the Guinness World Record, the team had to overcome a huge problem caused by the hot Dubai climate — motor failure. The heat and thinness of the surrounding air meant the motors had to work harder, while also heating up quickly, which caused the magnets in the rotors to fail.
As a result, the team had to deal with multiple crashes, losing seven drones before managing to break the previous official record of 557.64 km/h (347 mph) set by a Swiss team. This didn't come without adjustments to hardware and software, as the desert heat pushed the drone to its limits.
