The Apex drone by Porsche-backed Quantum Systems will be certified as the world's fastest electric flying object. Intended for use in interceptors, the technology will undergo payload speed tests for two more records in a German-Ukrainian collaboration, too.

During field testing on June 26, Germany's Quantum Systems N3XT team clocked its Apex Recordhunter drone at 699 km/h (434 mph) in level flight. This world best for a battery-powered aircraft now awaits FAI certification along with two more records pending from the company’s Ukrainian arm.

The electric aviation industry's current benchmark is held by Rolls-Royce's Spirit of Innovation, which set the crown for years at 555.9 km/h, in its turn dethroning the Siemens-powered Extra 330 LE's 337.5 km/h.

World's fastest drones

In the drone category, however, there are way more impressive achievements from dedicated gear that has little to do with popular drones like the DJI Mini, which is now discounted by 35% on Amazon. South Africa's Bell family duo had set the mark at 657.59 km/h with their Peregrine V4, while Australia's Blackbird team says it managed 730 km/h, but that was downwind and hasn’t been certified yet, either.

Quantum Systems is backed by Porsche subsidiary battery technology firm V4Smart and has been explicit that its Apex Recordhunter concept is a technology demonstrator, but lessons from it will feed directly into next-generation interceptor drones and be field-tested in Ukraine. As Robert Gardemin from N3XT:

For more than a year, this project meant early mornings, late nights, setbacks, breakthroughs, sacrifices, and an unwavering belief that we could push the limits of what’s possible. 699 km/h is an incredible milestone, but it’s only the beginning. We will be back very soon to go even faster and make it official.

The company's Ukrainian partner, WIY Drones, is chasing its own records that add battlefield value in addition to speed. WIY is expected to certify the fastest FPV interceptor carrying a 0.5 kg payload, called Strila, as well as the fastest anti-aircraft-class interceptor Spys drone in the next few weeks, too.

Against a backdrop increasingly shaped by cheap and fast Shahed-style attack drones, the raw speed of those developed with Quantum and WIY tech would translate directly into intercept reach and reaction time. It remains to be seen how the achievement will survive the constantly changing military interception dynamics, but the record is rather impressive on its own, and it can apparently be improved further.
