Casio to launch new desk clock modeled after the iconic stainless steel A158 watch
Casio’s upcoming DQD-851J-8JF desk clock, set to release on October 25, 2024, in Japan, is special - it is modeled after the iconic Casio A158 digital wristwatch, which is undoubtedly a beloved retro timepiece. Priced at 4,378 yen or $29.50 (tax included), the clock brings back the familiar look of the A158 but with some upgrades to its functionality.
The A158 wristwatch, first introduced in the 1980s, gained widespread popularity due to its sleek, lightweight design, affordable price, and durable stainless steel construction. It featured basic functions like a stopwatch, alarm, hourly time signal, and 12/24-hour time format. Its minimalist digital display and long-lasting battery made it a staple for those who prioritized reliability and simplicity in a watch.
In contrast, the Casio DQD-851J-8JF desk clock will have some advanced features like Japan-exclusive Wave Ceptor automatic time adjustment, a thermometer, and a hygrometer. It will also have a snooze alarm with adjustable sound levels, a full auto calendar, and an amber LED light. Measuring 102 x 117 x 48 millimeters and weighing 185 grams, it runs on two AA batteries, that can reportedly last around one year.
While the Wave Ceptor function only works in Japan, the clock can still be used elsewhere, though with some Japanese display elements. For reference, Wave Ceptor watches synchronize with radio time signals broadcast by various government time services around the world.
Pre-orders are now available on Casio’s official Japanese website here.
