Casio launches new metal G-Squad fitness watches with heart rate tracking and solar charging

After being subject to multiple leaks, Casio has officially taken the wraps off of its new fitness-focused G-Shock GM-H5600 lineup, which combines advanced fitness tracking capabilities with a premium square metal design. Just as the early reports indicated, it's a cross between the health-centric DW-H5600 and the lifestyle-friendly GM-5600.

Casio is positioning the G-Shock GM-H5600 as a versatile offering that’s perfect for everyday wear and rigorous workouts alike. It's part of the company’s sports-centric G-Squad line and comes in two colorways: the silver-cased GM-H5600-1 and the gold-cased GM-H5600-9. Both models are identical except for the colorways and feature a high-definition inverted MIP LCD screen, eco-friendly plastic resin bands, and an array of sensors on the back.

As far as the design is concerned, the GM-H5600 features a beautiful dimpled stainless steel bezel accented by four machined holes for a highly technical and sporty aesthetic. Despite the sleek metal construction, the watch remains comfortable and lightweight at just 63 grams.

As expected, the new G-Squad line packs a significant punch in the health tracking department. Underneath the carbon fiber-reinforced resin case back sits an optical sensor for continuous heart rate monitoring and blood oxygen level measurement. It also offers detailed sleep tracking with a 6-level sleep recovery status, sleep score, and a sleep charge feature. A robust three-axis accelerometer lets you track runs, walks, and multisport workouts. It also leverages the renowned Polar library to deliver comprehensive training analysis, cardio load status, and guided breathing exercises.

Like other H5600 series fitness offerings (like this DW-H5600-2, currently discounted on Amazon), you also get Bluetooth connectivity here, which lets you connect the watch to the Casio Watches app for accessing a detailed breakdown of various health and fitness data.

Power-hungry sensors and robust fitness tracking features mean the G-Shock GM-H5600 doesn't quite offer the marathon G-Shock endurance. Casio claims up to 35 hours of continuous tracking on a single charge, which can be stretched to up to one month in the basic watch mode with heart rate tracking turned off. The watch also packs built-in solar charging, but it's strictly used for the basic time display and doesn't support the power-hungry sensors and other features.  

Pricing & Availability

The GM-H5600-1 and GM-H5600-9 are launching first in Japan and will be available for purchase later in March for ￥51,700 (~$334). They should make their way to the US, Europe ane other markets in the coming weeks.
