Casio launches new lightweight Pro Trek watch with full-lume dial and triple-sensor tech

Casio is putting the 1st of October to good use — the Japanese company has also added a glow-in-the-dark dial with its new Pro Trek PRW-51, alongside the new Pro Trek PRW-69YT. The PRW-51LD-1JF went up on Casio Japan this morning at ¥61,600 including tax, which is about $390. Preorders are now open ahead of an October release.
The whole face is the feature. Casio has given the dial a phosphorescent treatment, so the large Arabic numerals glow green once the light goes, and the gist is that you can check the time without firing a backlight into your own eyes and wrecking your night vision. Anyone who has used a bright LED at 3 am in a super-dark environment will understand the reasoning.
The backlight is still there when you want it, and it's a double LED setup, one for the dial and one for the LCD, both with an auto light function. Casio says that the light colour is white, with a Neon Illuminator, and the dial material as Neobright.
This isn't the first lumed Pro Trek by any means. The PRW-35LD arrived last year with a phosphorescent digital display, which we covered at the time. What's different here is that the PRW-51 is an analog-digital watch, so the glow is only on the analog dial around the LCD.
The rest is what one would expect from a Climber Line Pro Trek. Triple Sensor covers an altimeter from −700 to 10,000 m with 30 manual memories and a trend graph, a barometer from 260 to 1,100 hPa with a 20-hour graph, and a 16-direction compass. Multiband 6 handles radio sync and power comes from Tough Solar, good for roughly six months on a full charge or 25 in power saving.
The case measures 51 × 47.4 × 14.5 mm and the watch weighs just 55 g, built from biomass plastic with a stainless steel bezel finished in black IP. Water resistance is 100 m, the crown screws down, and the crystal is inorganic glass.
