The new Casio G-Shock MRG-D5000 sports a unique bezel cut entirely from blue sapphire.
Casio has officially launched the MRG-D5000, its first sapphire MR-G, at 11 million yen including tax, which is about $69,520 — that's equivalent to 10.3 Grand Seiko Snowflakes. Only 20 will be made worldwide, sold by lottery in Japan from December, and the bezel is cut entirely from blue sapphire.

Casio has officially priced and listed its sapphire G-Shock, and the number is ¥11,000,000 including tax. That's around $69,520, and it historically makes the MRG-D5000 the most expensive G-Shock the company has ever sold by a huge margin.

Twenty will be made. Not twenty per market — twenty in the world. Casio Japan is handling it through a lottery system, with the watch scheduled for December.

We reported this one as a rumour in September, when it was described as the most expensive and rarest G-Shock yet. Both halves have now been confirmed.

You're only paying for the exclusivity and of course, the bezel, which is cut entirely from blue sapphire crystal. Casio calls this MR-G's first sapphire crystal model and markets it as a "manufacturing achievement," not just any other material swap, which is fair enough. Sapphire is brutally hard and thus difficult to shape, and a G-Shock bezel is not a "basic" form, like a round disc. The case underneath is titanium with a DLC treatment, and the MR-G multi-guard structure has been reworked to absorb impact before it reaches the sapphire.

The rest of the watch is much more conventional than the price suggests. It measures 51.1 × 43.2 × 16.5 mm and weighs 121 g on a Dura Soft rubber strap. Water resistance is 200 m, and power comes from Tough Solar, good for about 11 months in the dark or 22 in power saving. Multiband 6 handles radio sync across Japan, North America, Europe and China.

There's no Bluetooth, which is worth saying out loud. The MRG-B5000SA that Casio announced alongside it costs an eighth as much and does have it.

Timekeeping covers world time across 38 cities, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a 24-hour timer and five alarms. The crystal over the display is sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on its inner face.
