New Seiko Prospex Speedtimer debuts as a compact limited-edition V192 solar chronograph

Seiko has put a European limited edition of the Prospex Speedtimer up for preorder. The HBJ008P1 is listed on Seiko's European store at €880 including taxes, almost $990. Deliveries start in December, and it is capped at 4,000 units.
The theme is motorsport — Seiko is unusually direct about it too. The brand says the midnight-blue dial echoes the "color of classic sports cars", and that the orange is there for the sake of contrast. the seconds hand and the markings on the black sub-dials are intended to reference the gauges of that era. Orange also picks out the indices at 3, 6, 9 and 12. It's a somewhat restrained way to do a racing watch, and the color never spreads beyond those few points.
The case is the center of attention. It's stainless-steel at 39 mm across and 13.3 mm thick, with a 45.5 mm lug-to-lug and 20 mm lugs. That's relatively compact for a chronograph with a tachymeter scale. It's most definitely a long way from the 42 mm-plus norm in this category.
Above it, you get a curved sapphire crystal. The case back screws down, and water resistance is 10 bar. The hands and indices carry LumiBrite. Inside is the V192, Seiko's solar chronograph caliber. It runs for about six months on a full charge, times to a fifth of a second, and adds split timing and a 24-hour hand alongside the tachymeter.
Seiko ships the watch on a fully brushed steel bracelet with a safety folding clasp, and a brown leather strap comes in the box.
The watch has already been handled, too. Fratello published a hands-on yesterday, a day before the European store listing went live.
