BenQ has announced the W5850 in Europe, a 4K home cinema projector. According to the company, this new model “outperforms competitors” with its maximum image size of 200 inches (~508 cm).
The W5850 has a 1.0-1.6:1 throw ratio; for example, you could throw a 180 inch (~457 cm) image from a distance of 4 m (~13.1 ft). The projector’s blue laser light source delivers up to 2,600 ANSI lumens brightness and is expected to turn for up to 25,000 hours in Eco mode. It covers 100% of both the Rec.709 and DCI-P3 color gamuts and has a 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio (FOFO, with light source dimming).
According to the product listing, the model offers Filmmaker Mode and supports HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. Plus, there are image-perfecting tools like four-way lens shift and 1.6x motorized zoom. Ports on the device include HDMI 2.1 (HDCP 2.2) for 7.1-channel and Dolby Atmos audio pass-through, USB-A, and SPDIF. However, it is worth noting that there are no built-in speakers, and it appears that you would need to purchase the Android TV dongle separately.
This model measures 525.2 × 145.7 × 392.2 mm (~20.7 x 5.7 x 15.4 inches) wide. The BenQ W5850 Home Cinema Projector is expected to retail in Europe for €5,299 from mid-May; the company has not officially announced pricing or availability. Whether or when it could arrive in North America remains to be seen.
