Despite the incredible success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios has no plans for DLC or a sequel. The developer has since ended its relationship with Wizards of the Coast, holder of the Dungeons & Dragons IP. That also makes a Switch 2 port unlikely, as Larian CEO Swen Vincke just confirmed. However, a new leak implies that the breakup wasn’t as amicable as he previously suggested.
The Switch 2 still lacks one immensely popular RPG
The creative force behind the turn-based RPG participated in a Reddit Q&A session. While Vincke addressed concerns about the use of generative AI, he also delivered unhappy news to Nintendo fans. Addressing the chances of a Switch 2 game, he said, “We would have loved to, but it wasn’t our decision to make.”
Following the Q&A, NateTheHate2 commented on why a Baldur’s Gate 3 Switch 2 version is not happening. Addressing Larian, the leaker said, “Their relationship with Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast is not healthy.” He later elaborated, “I've heard several reasons, but all boil down to the relationship between Larian and Hasbro/WotC being in a bad place at the moment.”
Previously, Vincke revealed that the developers had lost their passion to make content for Baldur’s Gate 3 or a new D&D-style game. Instead, it resolved to work on new projects, with it recently pivoting to the Divinity franchise. Yet, apparently, the studio would have liked to bring BG3 to Nintendo’s console before moving on.
If Baldur's Gate 4 happens, it likely won't be from Larian
Given the opportunity for more profits, many followers believe there is more to the story. Some fans point to a DMCA takedown by Wizards of the Coast of a Stardew Valley mod with characters from the RPG. Vincke had earlier voiced his approval of the creation.
Hasbro, which owns WotC, also laid off a large number of employees in 2023. Some of the workers had been instrumental in forming the partnership with Larian Studios. Even with the potential for hard feelings, both sides insisted there was no tension between the companies.
NateTheHate2 infers that the parties wish to keep some disagreements private. Regardless, even if Switch 2 specs support Baldur’s Gate 3, prospects for a port now seem grim.
