Starbreeze has just announced that it is stopping the development of the Dungeons & Dragons game, which was due to be released in 2026. And that's not all, as several employees have been laid off.

In the world of video games, some announcements appeal to fans, such as Forza Horizon 6. But others may have the opposite effect, and this is the case with this announcement concerning the Dungeons & Dragons game developed by Starbreeze. The project has been canceled, and explanations were provided to understand the reasons behind this decision.

Known by the code name Project Baxter, this game was announced by the Swedish game studio in 2023 and was scheduled for release in 2026. Few details were available about it, although it was known that it would feature cooperative multiplayer, a lifetime commitment, a very strong community involvement, and that the project was progressing well.

However, following a strategic review, development was cancelled in order to better develop the Payday series. Faced with this drastic decision, Starbreeze CEO Adolf Kristjansson stated the following:

"This was a difficult but necessary decision. Our strategy is clear: Payday is one of the most iconic IPs in gaming, with unmatched reach and potential. By focusing our investment and talent here, we can accelerate delivery, engage players with more content, and reinforce Starbreeze’s position as the clear leader in the heisting genre. This is about sharpening our focus to create the strongest long-term value for our players, our people, and our shareholders.”

In addition, the studio has stated that it will have to lay off 44 employees and that it was committed to helping them find other jobs. Finally, we must not forget the fans who were eagerly awaiting this game and who must be extremely disappointed. However, it is possible that another studio will take over, although no information on this subject has yet been revealed.
