Who wants to play emulated PC games on a device that just happens to have the same form-factor as the Nintendo DS? 1,092 clamshell handheld enthusiasts to date, apparently, based on the meteoric rise of Ayaneo's latest Pocket-series campaign on Indiegogo.
The new gadget has only been on the platform for no more than 3 days, yet has accrued just over 4,888,000 Hong Kong dollars (HKD, or ~$625,549), which already exceeds its original HKD 50,000 (~$6,399) goal by ~9776%.
The Pocket DS is rated to launch an "exclusive" UI based on Android 13 using Qualcomm's Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 SoC. The software is backed to help the user get the most out of the device's dual display, the primary of which is a 7-inch screen made of FHD OLED with a refresh rate of 165Hz.
It might also improved on its Nintendo namesake with an 8,000mAh battery with USB-C, a "PC-grade turbo fan" and a top-plate made of CNC-milled metal in black, yellow or retro gray colorways.
The Pocket DS still starts at $3,132 HKD (~$399 or ~€344) on its crowdfunding page, albeit for a base model with 8GB of RAM and just 128GB of onboard storage.
A 12GB/256GB Early Bird unit currently goes for ~$439 or ~€378, while the Pocket DMG that is more like a Game Boy with an OLED screen is now listed for $579.99 on Amazon.
