Asus has now announced a schedule for when it will start to update its smartphones to a stable build of Android 12, and which devices will get this major upgrade. This process will start in 2021 - albeit in the last month of the year, with its current ZenFone 8 flagship.
It will be joined by its mechanical-camera sibling the 8 Flip, which might be a relief for many of its owners as this larger, more classically ZenFone variant was initially left out of Asus' beta program for ZenUI 8 based on the latest version of Android. The 8 series will be followed by the ZenFone 7 in the first half of 2022 - and that's all Asus would say about its line so far.
The OEM's 'other', gaming flagship smartphone series will also start to get Android 12 - however, this roll-out is current projected to start between January 1 and March 31 of 2022. This window applies to the ROG Phone 5 and 5s only, to be joined by their predecessor the 3 only, which will see an OTA for such a major upgrade at any time until the end of June 2022.
This announcement will probably start to be over-taken by a slew of others from many more Android OEMs shortly. It will be interesting to see how the frequency, volume and number of devices involved will compare to those of Asus.
