The Zephyrus S is among the most portable gaming laptops you can buy, but short battery life means you can't stray far from an outlet. On the charger, though, it's an attractive and capable high-end machine.

The Zephyrus S GX531 is the pinnacle of the Asus ROG laptop line-up. It's beautiful and a joy to use – but the battery life means it's barely a portable machine and the asking price is fairly massive too.

Each have their pros and cons: the MSI GS65 is more affordable than the competition, lighter as well, performs well with games and gets an excellent keyboard, but is not that well built. The Razer Blade 15 is excellently made, but is expensive, gets a rather unusual keyboard layout and doesn’t perform as well as the others. The Gigabyte Aero 15x is the best ultraportable gaming laptop of the moment, with simple looks, great build quality, solid performance and a huge battery, but is not available all around the world.

Asus wraps the technology of the Zephyrus S in a thin and compact case. The hardware is able to render every current game smoothly on the matte 144-Hz IPS display. The possibilities to upgrade the device are very limited.

There's no denying the Zephyrus S is supremely powerful - that's its main selling point and it comes in at a cheaper price point than both the XPS 15 and the MacBook Pro too. For the price, it's a solid choice if you're willing to deal with a few drawbacks.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S one hell of a sleek thin-and-light gaming notebook. It has a functional but beautiful design, hardware that can please both gamers and creatives, and portability that all desktop gaming PCs secretly envy. You do have to get past the keyboard & trackpad setup and somewhat lacking I/O, but once you do, you’re definitely in for a lot.

Gaming notebooks aren’t usually considered to be the slimmest offerings around the block by virtue of their design that requires beefy graphics and the immense amounts of cooling needed to keep them ticking along nicely but the spanking new Asus Republic of Gamers Zephyrus S GX531 bucks that trend as it is not only a throughbred gaming laptop that can take on the best of them in the proverbial ring but it’s also, at this point in time, one of the thinnest gaming rigs on the planet.

While there hasn’t been any major updates in the Zephyrus S compared to its predecessors, the smaller (and dare we say, perfect) form factor has definitely renewed our interest in the series. However, there are also a few important questions left unanswered, such as battery life. But if there’s a chance to discover that the Zephyrus S is the perfect mobile gaming machine, then we’d like to take that chance.

Asus Zephyrus S GX531GM-ES037T
The Asus Zephyrus S GX531GM-ES037T is a slim gaming laptop of the ROG ZEPHYRUS series which has redefined the category of ultra-slim gaming notebooks. The ZEPHYRUS S is precision-machined from metal and highly robust. It is 2100g light and measures just 15.75 mm at its thickest point. This makes it the most mobile ROG gaming notebook ever. The Asus Zephyrus S GX531GM-ES037T takes off with the GeForce RTX™ 2080 featuring Max-Q Design, the Core i7 8750H/2.2GHz, Win 10 Home 64-Bit, 16 GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD NVMe and its frameless 144Hz/3ms NanoEdge display, innovative AAS cooling system, state-of-the-art hardware and advanced design standards. The exclusive ROG Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) automatically raises the rear of the chassis by 5 mm when the display is opened. Combined with the special fans, five heat pipes, four copper heatsinks and a self-cleaning feature, it delivers high-performance cooling with efficient heat dissipation, optimized ventilation and a 22% larger cooling circuit compared to traditional cooling solutions. The ROG Zephyrus S passed strict internal quality checks, including several drops from a height of 76 cm. This makes it durable enough to deal with everyday hazards. It also meets the demanding MIL-STD-810G standards for withstanding vibration, shock, height and extreme environmental conditions.
Aura Sync allows users to customize the gaming keyboard of the ZEPHYRUS S with different RGB lighting effects. In addition, the area of the AAS cooling system can be freely illuminated. With Aura Sync, a user can also synchronize compatible ROG gaming equipment, from the mouse to the headset, and the colour matches them perfectly. The 15.6" wide-view NanoEdge display lets users fully immerse themselves, and with maximum speed at that, because the ZEPHYRUS S has integrated an extremely responsive IPS-based panel. With a 144Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time and 100% sRGB, each game is rendered smoother, more delay-free, more realistic and simply better. To enhance games and entertainment sound, the ZEPHYRUS S has a powerful stereo sound with Smart AMP technology. The audio system allows for sound reproduction with richer bass, a higher dynamic range and high volume. Possible damage to the speakers due to overheating or overloading is automatically prevented. The ZEPHYRUS S provides a total of five USB ports, including the fast USB-3.1 Gen-2 Type-C, all the options to connect gaming equipment, peripherals or external storage media. And with the back HDMI-2.0 port, users can enjoy their games on a compatible TV or an external monitor in 4K/60Hz. In conclusion, the Asus Zephyrus S GX531GM-ES037T is a powerful but very slim gaming laptop. It is suitable for gamers who are looking for the slimmest gaming laptop on the market to bring on the go.

Asus Zephyrus S GX531GX-ES036R
You would think that gaming laptops could not get any slimmer than they already are but Asus continues to achieve the impossible and proves us otherwise by introducing the next Zephyrus model in its line – the Asus Zephyrus S GX531. The Asus Zephyrus S GX531 repaints the picture of ultra-thin gaming laptops with its impossibly thin design, which can only be achieved by framing the edges with super-narrow bezels. The super narrow bezels create an impeccable outlook in terms of appearance and undeterred gaming experience. The shrinking in size enables this gaming powerhouse to be carried wherever and whenever users go with perfect ease without taking too much unnecessary space. The Zephyrus S GX531 can fit inside smaller bags and provide more space on a desktop surface for flexible hand movements. These compulsory quality-of-life features tailored for professional gamers are much sought and appreciated among the Republic of Gamers community. Its surreal thinness belie its true potential – the Zephyrus S GX531 is loaded with tremendous engine power with the help of the GeForce RTX 2080 GPU and the latest Intel Core i7 processor. It certainly puzzles the mind how something so compact and thin can fit these vital high-end components, but it delivers much justice in terms of gameplay performance. High refreshing rate equals to a smooth gameplay experience, which can be a deciding factor in important make-or-break moments. On top of its 240 Hz IPS-level display, the 3 ms gray-to-gray response time emulates sharper and more distinct visuals with the highest quality of resolution possible. It is interesting to note that opting for a HDR display instead can extend battery life through Panel Self Refresh and Static Display Refresh Rate Switch technologies, which effectively cut down power consumption by up to 13 percent. Switching to the HDR display does not mean that users have to compromise brilliant graphics in favor of longer battery life. The HDR display is capable of emulating more vivid and vibrant colors while correctly grading black and white colors via local dimming. High-end gaming laptops could not peak in performance were it not for its hardworking cooling system. The Zephyrus S GX531 comes bolstered with a stellar cooling system of its own. The innovative implementation of the Active Aerodynamics System (AAS) technology opens up additional vents to provide more airflow up to 22 percent. The AAS cooling system also has a handy dandy self-cleaning thermal module, which eject dust and debris from clogging up the internal components of the laptop. Thermal heat is siphoned out from four outlets through the continuous diligent work of sleek dual 12 Volt fans. The Zephyrus S GX531’s cooling system seems to keep on expanding with each explored territory of its own. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

The Zephyrus S GX531 is a niche product within an already small niche, and that's because Asus chose to sacrifice on practicality and portability in order to favor cooling and performance. As a result, this laptop performs better than the other RTX 2080 Max-Q 15-inch gaming ultraportables on the market and keeps the components at slightly lower temperatures, but unless you keep it plugged in and on a desk, you'll struggle with its ergonomics, shallow keyboard, and rather short battery life. Down below we'll explain how we reached this conclusion.

All in all, I expect the 2019 Zephyrus GX701 to turn some heads and attract quite a few potential buyers if the final products actually deliver at the performance, thermals and noise levels. This is not going to be a cheap-laptop by any means, but ultraportable gaming laptops have never been cheap, and those with a 17-inch screen squeezed inside a compact shell are even harder to come by and there’s no wonder will demand a premium. In fact, there’s only the MSI GS75 Stealth Thin you could consider instead, for the time being. The 15-inch GX531 on the other hand pales in the more competitive niche of 15-inch ultraportables, and its multiple quirks and lacks compared to the 17-inch variant sure don’t help its cause.

ASUS appears to be clearly marketing this specific model of the Zephyrus S for the hardcore professional. As such, this is more likely to be in the hands of an IT professional than a gaming enthusiast. A factor that is represented in the somewhat vertical price tag. Such prices are, however, in the nature of performance laptops. You want a top-level portable performance? Expect it to cost you! Despite it all, however, if you are after a laptop for both work and play, it’s hard to come up with examples better than this that tick as many boxes.

The Asus S Zephyrus GX531GW is an unconventional-looking, slim and sturdy gaming laptop the likes of which are few in the market. While the fan noise is one issue, the gaming laptop comes with technologies like AAS, Sonic Studio, Sonic Radar III etc. and offers a smooth gaming experience. The battery life of the laptop is also optimum (about two-and-a-half hours) if you are using the laptop for the purpose of browsing, watching videos etc. For users who would like a more conventional Asus device, they could check out the G series laptops by the company.

At S$3,698, the Zephyrus S GX531GW is a good S$500 more expensive than its predecessor, but it makes up for that with significantly better performance. Previously, you could only get the Zephyrus S with a GeForce GTX 1060 locally, but you can now get the newest model with up to a GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q, a huge step up. There's much to like about the Zephyrus S now, and I think the more powerful specifications and better battery life have transformed it into quite a winner.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
In the notebook sector, Asus had a global market share of about 11% from 2014-2016, making it the fourth largest laptop manufacturer. In the smartphone sector, Asus is not among the Top 5 and has only a small market share (as of 2016).
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
