The Zephyrus S is among the most portable gaming laptops you can buy, but short battery life means you can't stray far from an outlet. On the charger, though, it's an attractive and capable high-end machine.

The Zephyrus S GX531 is the pinnacle of the Asus ROG laptop line-up. It's beautiful and a joy to use – but the battery life means it's barely a portable machine and the asking price is fairly massive too.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S looks to be better built and smaller than its predecessor in every way, but we’re uncertain about the sacrifices it has made to get here.

The Zephyrus S is an even slimmer 2018 take on an already-sleek machine, pushing the gaming laptop to new levels of lean. It's spendy, though, so you have to be committed to maximum portability to swallow the trade-offs.

The Zephyrus S GX531 is the pinnacle of the Asus ROG laptop line-up. It's not necessarily the best gaming laptop ever – some compromises will have been made, after all, to claim the title of "thinnest" – but it's an excellent balance of features, specs and design aesthetics.

Each have their pros and cons: the MSI GS65 is more affordable than the competition, lighter as well, performs well with games and gets an excellent keyboard, but is not that well built. The Razer Blade 15 is excellently made, but is expensive, gets a rather unusual keyboard layout and doesn’t perform as well as the others. The Gigabyte Aero 15x is the best ultraportable gaming laptop of the moment, with simple looks, great build quality, solid performance and a huge battery, but is not available all around the world.

15.60":
15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.

80%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
