While Intel has replaced the Core Ultra 100 Meteor Lake APUs with the Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake Core Ultra 200 chips, the H-series Meteor Lake processors still remain solid options. Moreover, since we now have newer notebooks based on the latest chips, Meteor Lake notebooks have come down in price by quite a bit. Add limited-time discounts on top of these decreased MSRPs and you can get an awesome laptop for well under $1,000.
Case in point, Walmart is now selling the Asus Vivobook S 15 (S5506MA) with a Core Ultra 7 155H for only $668 instead of the $799 retail price. Walmart advertises the offer as a “Rollback” which means it is only available for a limited time, at least in theory.
Looking at the specs, the Asus Vivobook S 15 (S5506) relies on a Core Ultra 7 155H, 16 GB of LPDDR5X memory, 1 TB of replaceable storage, and a 75 Wh battery. There is also an Intel Wi-Fi 6E and BT 5.3 chip on the inside. The outside of the chassis holds a 15.6-inch OLED panel, a single-zone RGB backlit keyboard, a large trackpad, and a decent port selection.
On the topic of ports, we have:
- Two Type-A connectors
- Two Thunderbolt 4 ports with DP and PD
- One HDMI 2.1 out
- One microSD card reader
- A 3.5 mm audio jack
Overall, from a hardware perspective, the Asus Vivobook S 15 on sale is a pretty capable machine for less than $700.
So, how does the Asus Vivobook S 15 perform in real life?
While we haven’t reviewed the Vivobook S 15 (S5506), the combination of a 16-core Core Ultra 7 155H and 16 GB of speedy RAM should result in sufficient mid-range performance. Moreover, the 15.6-inch OLED panel with its 2,880 x 1,620 resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, 600 nits of HDR brightness, and 100% DCI-P3 coverage should deliver an excellent viewing experience.
Add to this the efficiency of Meteor Lake and a respectable 75 Wh battery and the laptop should provide pretty good battery life.
So, with the current discount in place, users who want an affordable daily driver that doesn’t skimp out on the essentials will find much to love in the Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED (S5506).
