With handhelds such as the Lenovo Legion Go 2 getting a price increase, it is refreshing news to see another handheld get discounted. The handheld in question is the Asus ROG Xbox Ally, the less-powerful sibling to the ROG Xbox Ally X.
When the ROG Xbox Ally was announced last year, it had a launch price of $599. In our review, we acknowledged that its launch price was on the high side considering its performance. Now, that the Asus ROG Xbox Ally can be purchased for $499.99 on Amazon ,which is $100 or 17% off its original price, it makes it easier to recommend.
For the new price, you get a Windows handheld with a 7-inch 1080 display and a 120Hz refresh rate with VRR. It is powered by AMD's Ryzen Z2 A processor, paired with 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. While the RAM is not user-upgradeable, the SSD can be replaced with a larger capacity one. There's also a microSD card slot for adding more storage
The Asus ROG Xbox Ally has a 60Wh battery which offers good battery life, and it comes with a 65W charger. The handheld also features two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0, an audio jack, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4. It also has Hall Effect triggers, two customizable back buttons, and a 6-axis gyroscope.
The ROG Xbox Ally ships with Windows, and while the Xbox Full Screen Experience does provide a handheld console experience, there's also the option to install SteamOS on it, which will even give you better performance.
The ROG Xbox Ally has received praise for its design and ergonomics, allowing it to be used for longer gaming sessions. While its performance leaves a lot to be desired, it is still a great and comfortable handheld for playing less-demanding titles, emulation, remote play, and cloud gaming.
