I truly considered the ROG Flow Z13 one of the gaming company’s best innovations yet. Granted, the ROG Flow Z13 is also arguably ahead of its time. But if anything, it offers a wondrous peek at what the future of “mobile” gaming could possibly look like. And I got to say I like what I am seeing.

The Asus ROG Flow Z13 (GZ301ZC-PS73) is a design masterpiece and makes for a remarkable powerful tablet, but the12700H and RTX 3050 can’t give their best in such a confined space. As for the ROG XG mobile graphics dock and its RTX 3080 graphics, it’s a similar story.

The Asus ROG Flow Z13 is essentially the Microsoft Surface Pro by design with performance of a gaming laptop. Its tablet form factor and multi-utility orientation make it a first-of-its-kind device with portability of a screen, versatility of a tablet, and performance of a laptop. Importantly, it works well in all supported formats. That said, the Asus ROG Flow Z13 ticks the right boxes. But its underwhelming on-battery time puts a stinker on the otherwise well rounded package.

As a gaming PC, the biggest competitor to the ROG Flow Z13 is not any laptop or tablet… its actually the Steam Deck by Valve. With both machines able to transform into a gaming PC, the Steam Deck trumps the ROG Flow Z13 by being handheld playable and with gamepad controls already. As a work computer, the ROG Flow Z13 easily wins over the Steam Deck though as the option to do work is always present while the Deck doesn’t have this option and tethers you to a larger screen. Ultimately, the best use-case here would be a work-by-day/play-by-night scenario wherein your ROG Flow Z13 is your handy daily computer for study or work and once work is done or the weekends come around, you connect a gamepad to your Flow Z13 and hook it up to your XG Mobile connected to a monitor to serve as your gaming PC. Keeping in mind the limitations we’ve mentioned that’s unique to tablets, ROG has made the most with the form factor and future technologies will certainly improve on the weight, battery and thickness of this device but for now the ROG Flow Z13 is a really incredible device and matched for a specific use-case

The ASUS ROG Flow Z13 is a testament to how technology has evolved. It packs a lot of power inside this small form factor that you can easily use on the go. There aren’t a lot of compromises when it comes to this laptop at this size and it’s hard to find a competition that allows you to do so much with such a small device. Priced at PHP 99,995, the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 gives you a lot for the price, especially against competitors who offer bulky laptops for around the same price. The XG Mobile meanwhile with the RTX 3080 is priced at PHP 89,995. With the versatility this device allows you, you can expect to pay a premium, but in my opinion? It’s all worth it to have a device that can do so much in such a small form factor. As they say, to be at the forefront of technology comes at a price, in this case, it’s all well worth it. You can check it out right here.

Want to catch your favourite Netflix show on the couch? Fold the detachable keyboard to the back or remove it completely and place it on your lap. Do you love mixing EDM tracks? Connect a DJ controller to it and the Flow Z13’s touchscreen and kickstand allow you to turn it into a mixer. Oh, you really want to play high-end games too? Guess what, you can connect an ROG XG Mobile eGPU that’s powered by a GeForce RTX 3080 (the eGPU is sold separately) and turn it into a gaming powerhouse. In fact, the Flow Z13 is a great device for cloud-gaming services (hello, StarHub's GeForceNow). I truly considered the ROG Flow Z13 one of the gaming company’s best innovations yet. Granted, the ROG Flow Z13 is also arguably ahead of its time. But if anything, it offers a wondrous peek at what the future of “mobile” gaming could possibly look like. Bottom point, the ROG Flow Z13 is an excellent match for an eGPU. Its advantages are the powerful CPU performance paired with an excellent thermal module that allows for good temperatures and quiet fans. The experience with the XG Mobile, on the other hand, can be improved. I didn’t get to properly test this last year, but having spent time with it now, I’m not happy with the internal GPU temperatures or the fact that the chip ends up thermally throttled in gaming sessions and longer GPU-heavy workloads. Hopefully, the 2022 XG Mobile update changes things, as it’s a slightly larger format with perhaps improved cooling capacity. However, if you’re planning on running your games and workloads on an external monitor and not sending the signal back to the 13-inch display of the Z13, you could also consider a Thunderbolt eGPU enclosure with this device. That way, you’re not tied to the few options available with the XG Mobile and its unconvincing cooling module, and also get to place a full-power graphics chip in your eGPU unit.

The ROG Flow Z13 is a tablet-laptop hybrid that gives a gaming device the form factor of a productivity device. The strengths of a portable device like this is multi-fold, though some care should be taken, given that its hardware far exceeds the capacity of the battery. Still, if one can overlook this one bugbear, this is a decent choice for a work laptop while on the go, and for gaming when plugged in.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m excited about a tablet of all things. It’s hard not to be when it has such powerful specs. Now is the Asus ROG Flow Z13 going to be the portable gaming solution to end all our problems? No. While the Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti GPU will allow it to play older titles at lower settings, in order to truly unlock the power, you’ll definitely need the XG Station, which makes it markedly less grab-and-go. Still, what Asus has accomplished with the Flow Z13 is seriously encouraging, particularly with the design, keyboard and display. I’m just hoping it won’t cost an arm, leg, soul and first-borne babe to play around with this intriguing piece of tech. Either way, I’m excited to get a consumer model and get to testing.

Model:
The latest from Asus is none other than the ROG Flow Z13. This laptop is a normal convertible with an integrated kickstand along with an attachable keyboard. It is something quite similar to the ones seen in Microsoft Surface Pro for years. However, it is worth noting that the Flow Z13 is considerably more massive and heavier. Nevertheless, due to its higher weight, the convertible tends to look rather premium, and this impression is supported by both the stability and workmanship of the aluminium case. As for the integrated kickstand, it allows a maximum opening angle of up to 170 degrees. While the material might be very thin, it does not bend when the angle is changed though. It is also worth mentioning that the two hinges are very well adjusted in principle with only a slight degree of play.
Apart from that, both the volume rocker and the power button are neatly integrated into the case. This also includes the fingerprint scanner. The overall design language of this model is definitely in line with the ROG laptops series, falling perfectly in the category of a gaming tablet. In addition, there is a small window on the back of the case which can be illuminated and supports Aura Sync technology (just like the keyboard backlight). However, this tends to create a small hump, which is the reason for the tablet being unable to lay flat on its back and wobbles. On the other hand, the fan grilles on the back have also been implemented as design elements, so they are hardly noticeable. There is also a large Republic of Gamers logo on the top, which is flanked by the two fan outlets.
As far as its attachable keyboard is concerned, it doubles up as a cover and protects the display when the device is not in use. At the back of the cover, it has some sort of velour finish, which feels nice to the touch and provides a good grip, but also picks up dust and dirt very quickly. In terms of its display, Asus offers two different 13.4-inch IPS touchscreens in a 16:10 aspect ratio for the ROG Flow Z13. In a nutshell, the subjective image impression is quite good, and everything looks very sharp, even at the lower Full HD resolution. The ROG Flow Z13 comes with three CPU options which includes Core i9-12900H, Core i7-12700H and Core i5-12500H paired with either GeForce RTX 3050 Ti or Iris Xe Graphics GPU options. Mostly the models offer 16GB of RAM each. It comes with 1TB of storage. As for its battery, this laptop has been equipped with a 56Wh battery. Overall, it is a good gaming laptop to be owned, depending on the need and preference of the user.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
