Asus BR1402FG review: Robust student laptop for everyday use ↺
With the new Asus BR1402F, the manufacturer is primarily targeting schoolchildren. The overall package is designed for everyday school life but also adapted for students' use of technical devices. The keyboard is splash-proof, and the housing is shock-proof and resistant to fingerprints. The display lid and the underside of the base unit are also made of a non-slip material so that the laptop does not slip out of the hand so easily on the way between classrooms. Windows 11 Pro Education is also pre-installed, which further increases the overall value of the convertible and enables schools to manage the device and the installed applications, among other things.
With a price of just 590 euros, it is not easy to find comparable convertibles that offer a similarly comprehensive overall package as the Asus model. Only the Dell Inspiron 14 7435 2-in-1, which, however, does not offer an integrated pen, is less economical, is not already equipped with Windows 11 Pro Education, and is nowhere near as robust as the Asus model. In addition to the Dell, we also used for comparison the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga G4, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8, and the Acer Spin 3 SP313-51N-56YV. Also included in the comparison is the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 - a tablet with an optional keyboard, which is in a completely different price range but demonstrates the current status of ARM processors for Windows, which will certainly have a strong influence on the market for student laptops in the future.

Case & equipment
The entire casing of the Asus BR1402FG is made of plastic, as is to be expected in this price range. However, in the case of the Asus convertible, the material used does not automatically mean a loss of robustness. The display lid, for example, is very stable and can hardly be bent. The base unit is also comparatively robust, although the casing gives way in the keyboard area. However, this is hardly noticeable during everyday typing and does not restrict the typing experience. However, models with magnesium or aluminum cases have the edge here. The certification according to the US military standard MIL-STD 810H shows how robust the device is. The certification is not as insignificant here as with many other models, as it really applies to the entire device. The tests for this certification pay particular attention to environmental conditions. For example, the Asus model was able to impress in extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, and vibrations. The device should, therefore, survive everyday school life without any problems.
The underside and the display lid have a particularly non-slip surface so that the convertible sits much better in the hand and cannot slip out even when it's wet. The convertible is only available in one color variant and is black with blue accents on the edges and hinges. The model's footprint is acceptable considering the price range, but the display edges are very wide and no longer meet today's standards. We suspect that the thicker display edges contribute to the model's resilience. It is practical that the pen can be stored inconspicuously in the casing and can also be charged there.
Windows 11 Pro Education is installed as standard on every Asus BR1402FG. It allows users to only use apps selected by the administrator, administrators can manage the devices and the applications installed on them, sensitive data from the educational institution is protected, and simple remote access to the school network can be set up.
The equipment is also impressive and offers a USB-A and USB-C ports on both sides. The convertible can be charged via both USB-C ports, with only the left port also offering an integrated DisplayPort. Unfortunately, the USB port on the right side is only USB 2.0. While there is a Kensington lock, a volume control, and the "garage" for the stylus on the right side, the Asus convertible also offers a full-size Ethernet port, an HDMI 1.4b port, and a 3.5mm combo jack on the left side. Two cameras are also integrated: a webcam with privacy shutter and a second, more powerful camera, which is located on the left above the keyboard and functions as a rear camera when the convertible is in tablet mode.
The "Good-to-Go" LED, which is integrated directly into the display lid, is unusual. This allows teachers to immediately see if a particular student's laptop is having problems with the internet connection or power supply - and gives a signal if a student may need help.
Maintenance
The Asus BR1402FG convertible places great emphasis on repairability. If you only want to replace the RAM, there is even a particularly easy-to-open cap with just one screw on the underside. For a closer look under the surface, only 9 screws on the underside need to be removed. The keyboard can then be removed. What is particularly practical here is that the screws all remain in the base plate after removal, so they can't be lost. The M.2 SSD is in standard 2280 format and can be easily replaced. According to Asus' advertising material, the cooling unit, the battery, the keyboard, and the connections can also be replaced without any problems.
Input devices: Solid keyboard that could be a little quieter
The keyboard of the Asus BR1402FG Convertible is solid with decent key travel, which provides a nice and crisp typing experience. The keyboard yields when typing, but not so much that it disturbs the process. However, the keyboard clatter can be criticized because, depending on the momentum when typing, it can lead to somewhat louder clicking noises. The trackpad is a solid size but could be a little larger. It is practical that the trackpad can be converted into a number pad. Although this does not enable as precise input as a physical numpad, it is still better than not having one at all.
Display
The display of the Asus BR1402FG is also acceptable for the price. The contrast is even comparatively very good, and the brightness is theoretically sufficient with an average of 251 cd/m2, but with the glossy display this results in a combination that does not cope well with sunlight. In the classroom, it may be necessary to adjust the seating position and laptop placement to avoid glare from sunlight..
The color space coverage is acceptable and sufficient for everyday use; professional photo and video editing is, of course, not possible. We were also unable to detect PWM flickering.

We were able to measure a significant improvement in the average DeltaE values of the grayscale with the calibration. The average value of 6.3 was improved to a very good 0.6. The color calibration also showed significant increases with an original DeltaE value of 7.02, which improved to 4.25. Saturation showed the least improvement after calibration so only an average DeltaE value of 6.59 was achieved here.

As previously announced, outdoor use shows the biggest weakness of the glossy display with low maximum brightness. The image is distorted by strong reflections, making it difficult to see the content.
Performance: Only suitable for basic applications
The performance of the Asus BR1402FG is difficult to evaluate. On the one hand, the built-in Intel Core i3-N305 usually performs worse compared to possible competitors, but on the other hand, the model costs a few hundred euros less than most models in our list. It is also clear that Asus aimed for the most stable overall package possible for typical office tasks and web browsing. The only outlier here is the 2-in-1 from Dell, which is available for just 500 euros at the time of the test but does not offer Windows 11 Pro Education, does not have a built-in pen, is not as robust, and has a significantly higher power consumption for the better results.
Nevertheless, it must be noted that the AMD Ryzen 5 7530U of the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga and Dell Inspiron 14 7435 2-in-1 as well as the Intel Core i5-1335U in the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 and the Intel Core i5-1135G7 of the Acer Spin 3 SP313-51N-56YV are clearly faster. Only the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 with ARM processor drops even further in some benchmarks. However, the convertible runs smoothly in everyday use and only struggles when it comes to serious tasks. Students who only need the convertible for editing PDF files and working in the Microsoft Office suite should, therefore, generally not notice the low performance.
Test conditions
Asus does not provide any additional software for the BR1402FG Convertible to customize the performance. Thus, there are only the various performance modes of Windows itself. However, the TDP cannot be adjusted in any of these modes; the Windows settings normally only adjust the duration and frequency of the boost power. The TDP is therefore 17 watts in PL1 and 26 watts in PL2 by default. The fans are somewhat louder in performance mode and we often had problems with the fans repeatedly revving up for a few seconds during light use. In a school or library, the "Balanced" and "Energy-saving" modes are therefore recommended.
Processor
Asus relies on the Intel Core i3-N305 for the convertible for students. This is an entry-level CPU from the Alder Lake-N series. The processor, which will be released in early 2023, offers eight efficiency cores with up to 3.8 GHz. Our Cinebench R15 endurance test shows that the 3.8 GHz is only almost reached for a short time at the beginning of the benchmark. After one minute, the clock rate stabilizes at just under 2.4 GHz with occasional peaks of 3.2 to 3.6 GHz. In operation, the processor is comparatively economical with a maximum power consumption of 26.3 watts. The average consumption is a comparatively low 15.2 watts, which is not unexpected given the performance compared to the competition.
It is worth noting that the core temperature never rose above 79 °C, which indicates a limitation on the manufacturer's side. Potentially better results in the benchmarks would have been possible at higher temperatures.

System performance
The results of the PCMark 10 benchmark once again show the processor's weaknesses and make it clear that this model is really only intended for students and is primarily designed for office programs and web browsing. The AMD R5 7530U of the even cheaper Dell Inspiron 14 7435 2-in-1 performs significantly better despite its lower price but consumes more power. Power sockets are often insufficiently available in classrooms. It, therefore, makes sense to install the most energy-efficient processor possible in the Asus BR1402FG student laptop, even if this comes at the expense of performance.
The results of the other benchmarks of the Asus BR1402FG are also comparatively low. Nevertheless, the performance is generally sufficient for the target group. However, it could be too low for schools that offer computer science courses with more demanding requirements at an early stage.

DPC latencies
The new Asus BR1402FG Convertible fails in terms of DPC latencies. The device is currently unsuitable for lossless audio and video editing. However, this may change at any time with upcoming driver and BIOS updates. We did not notice any problems in everyday use, and it was also possible to play YouTube videos in 4K quality.

Mass storage
The installed Kingston M.2 NVMe SSD in combination with the Intel Core i3-N305 does not have outstanding read speeds. The competitors usually perform better here. In individual cases, some competitors, such as the Dell Inspiron 14 7435 2-in-1 and the Acer Spin 3, have slower memory speeds. The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 often performs worse than the Asus BR1402FG convertible. We simulated the realistic everyday life of a student and primarily opened Word and PDF files, as well as other files from the Microsoft Office Suite. We did not notice any significantly disruptive loading times. The low storage capacity of the basic configuration is much more problematic here, as 128 GB is quickly used up. However, the maximum configuration only offers 512 GB of storage space, which should be sufficient for a student laptop. The SSD in the classic 2280 format can optionally be expanded with a 1 TB model.

Graphics
The performance of the integrated Iris Xe with 32 EUs Graphics unit is very rudimentary. The model is therefore definitely not suitable for gaming. However, for a laptop that is primarily aimed at students, this can potentially even be seen as an advantage. The benchmarks show that in terms of graphics performance, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 ARM chip of the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 is superior to the Asus model. In addition, AMD's advantage in mobile processors compared to Intel chips of the eleventh and twelfth generation is once again evident. The integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 of the Dell Inspiron 14 7345 2-in-1 achieves the best results of all competitors, beating models that are almost twice as expensive. Compared to the Asus BR1402FG, however, the extra performance of the integrated graphics is not really relevant, as the device is not intended for AAA titles or for gaming at all.

Emissions & Energy
Noise emissions
The Asus BR1402FG Convertible generally remains quiet in normal office use. Only occasionally do the fans spin up annoyingly, causing the notebook to briefly reach almost 31 dB. This behavior can be minimized - but not completely avoided - with the energy-saving mode in the Windows performance settings. However, the advantage of the Asus convertible is that it is not particularly loud even under load. The comparison with possible competitors shows that only the significantly more expensive Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga G4 is really noticeably quieter. The Dell Inspiron 14 7435 2-in-1 is just as quiet on average under load as the Asus model but shows significantly louder peak values. The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 and the Acer Spin 3 are both louder than the Asus convertible.

Speaker
You shouldn't expect miracles from the speakers of the Asus BR1402FG convertible. Bass is almost completely absent, and the maximum volume is also comparatively low. However, the quality is perfectly adequate for simple scenarios such as watching YouTube videos or Netflix movies on the couch or in bed.

The power consumption of the Asus BR1402FG convertible is very good and is at a maximum of 7 watts in idle mode. Even under load, the consumption is not high, and the notebook only draws a maximum of 35 watts. The 65-watt power supply unit supplied is therefore more than sufficient. As already mentioned, the low power consumption is particularly relevant for a laptop that is aimed specifically at students. For comparison, the Dell Inspiron 14 7435 2-in-1 performs better in most benchmarks but requires almost twice as much power in almost all load scenarios. This means that a classroom equipped with the Dell convertible requires twice as much power on average as with the Asus BR1402FG.

Battery life
In the WLAN test with a brightness of 150 cd/m², the Asus convertible lasts just under 9.5 hours, which is a solid value. However, the Dell Inspiron 14 7435 2-in-1 is ahead with over 11 hours. The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 and the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 last longer. The Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga G4 and the Acer Spin 3 SP313-51N-56YV only manage just under 8 hours. However, a fully charged battery of the Asus BR1402FG convertible should be sufficient for everyday school use.

Verdict - Focus on versatility and reparability, performance weakens
The Asus BR1402FG student notebook is a sophisticated and sturdy device designed specifically for the demands of everyday school life. With its scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass, MIL-STD 810H certification, and splash-proof keyboard, it offers exceptional resistance to everyday wear and tear. Despite the low price of 590 euros, it offers a comprehensive overall package, that is rarely found in this price range. The integrated pen function and the 2-in-1 design increase flexibility and application possibilities in the classroom, while the variety of connections and good repairability guarantee long-term use and adaptability. Windows 11 Pro Education is also pre-installed.
The Asus BR1402FG targets the education sector with its robust design and price-performance ratio but faces challenges in terms of system performance.
The only problem is the low performance of the built-in Intel processor. There could have been a little more power here. On the other hand, this would probably have increased the power consumption, which could be an exclusion criterion for use in the classroom. In everyday use, the notebook reliably fulfills its role as a work device for pupils or students, but only as long as the tasks are limited to classic office activities, note-taking, PDF editing, and web browsing.
The very good connectivity and good repairability are further plus points that support the longevity and practicality of the device. The solid input devices and overall reliable construction round off the overall picture, although the display and performance lag behind the top models. The strongest competitor, the Dell Inspiron 14 7435 2-in-1 is cheaper and offers significantly better performance thanks to the built-in AMD chip, but cannot keep up in terms of additional features such as the integrated stylus, robustness, and high connectivity. In addition, its power consumption is twice as high in almost all scenarios.
Asus has definitely focused on versatility and an energy-saving design with the BR1402FG convertible and neglected performance in return. Nevertheless, the result is a very flexible and durable convertible that can be used effectively for years to come by simply upgrading the SSD and RAM.
