A new report suggests that Apple could be developing new 12-inch and 13-inch MacBook models. Citing industry sources, the report claims that Apple would target both machines for the education sector.

Earlier this week, Ming-Chi Kuo alleged that Apple was considering a more affordable MacBook model, with prices currently starting at US$1,099 for a current-generation MacBook Air. The report followed a similar one by DigiTimes a month earlier in which the website stated:

Sources said Apple will likely launch a new product line for its low-cost MacBooks to differentiate it from the existing MacBook Air and Pro lines. The outer appearance will still use a metal casing but made of different materials. The unit price of the mechanical components will be lower, allowing for a more affordable price aimed at the education market, similar to the positioning of Chromebooks.

As 9to5Mac notes, Chromebook pricing varies wildly, particularly following the introduction of the Chromebook Plus program. For context, the program consists of devices like the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 and Chromebook Plus 515, which Acer bases on AMD Ryzen 7000 APUs and 13th Gen Intel Core processors, respectively. Even so, a cheaper MacBook could eat into Apple's existing education sector offering, which remains dominated by entry-level iPads.

According to Naver poster yeux1122, Apple is actually developing 12-inch and 13-inch MacBooks for the education market. While yeux1122 claims to have obtained this information from a 'supply chain source', 9to5Google believes otherwise. Instead, the website asserts that 'almost everything posted from the account is based on what they've read on Weibo and other Chinese social media'. In other words, it appears that rumours of a return to the 12-inch MacBook are wide of the mark for now.
