The Android 17 beta is just around the corner.
According to official information, Android 17 – codenamed “Cinnamon Bun” – is set to launch shortly. This comes as a surprise, as a developer preview is usually released before the beta phase begins. However, Google appears to be skipping that step and is expected to roll out the beta to the first Pixel devices in the coming days.

Google appears to have fundamentally revised its update strategy. For the first time, the company is skipping a developer preview and moving straight into the beta phase. As recently confirmed in the official Reddit community r/android_beta, the Android 17 beta is expected to launch soon. This shift is linked to the adoption of the so-called canary build model. Under this approach, developers work directly on the main development branch, reducing internal testing time and enabling a faster rollout of beta versions. According to reports, the Android 17 beta could begin around February 18.

Android 17, codenamed “Cinnamon Bun,” is based on the stable Android 16 QPR – Quarterly Platform Release – foundation. So far, Google has revealed little about the specific changes included in this update. Officially, the company only refers to the “latest bug fixes and improvements to stability and performance.” However, rumors suggest that Android 17 could introduce noticeable visual refinements. These may include more pronounced blur effects and a clearer separation between the notification shade and Quick Settings. The overall design would move closer to styles seen in systems such as Apple’s iOS or Xiaomi’s HyperOS. Such changes, however, are already dividing opinion – particularly among longtime Android users who prefer the platform’s traditional look and feel.

Caution: Data loss possible during beta launch

Anyone with a Pixel device enrolled in the Android Beta Program will automatically receive Android 17 Beta 1 as an OTA update. Users who prefer to remain on the stable Android 16 QPR3 release must opt out of the program before the beta goes live. After the beta rollout, Google provides a “downgrade OTA,” but installing it is strongly discouraged – it reportedly results in a complete wipe of user data. A safe way to exit the beta program without losing data will only become available again toward the end of the beta cycle, which is expected in June 2026.
