Huawei appears to have deliberately waited until Apple officially revealed the launch date for the iPhone 17 yesterday, August 26, before countering in the early hours of the morning with an initial teaser for the Mate XTs launch, which will take place in the middle of the IFA period on September 4, 2025. Of course, this will be in China and not in Berlin.
Huawei Mate XTs vs. Apple iPhone 17 in China
One year after the launch of the first Mate XT, Huawei is once again positioning its second tri-foldable against Apple's iPhones. In China, this could well dent the success of iPhone 17 pre-orders starting on September 9, especially since the world's first tri-foldable device was quite successful in Huawei's home market despite its high price. As the Mate XTs model name suggests, no major changes to the concept of the first double-folding 10-inch tablet are expected.
For example, the Z-shape will remain, but there will be new colors, as the video officially published by Huawei Mobile CEO Richard Yu on Weibo confirms. A new white variant is shown here for the first time, and there will also be a purple color option. According to Digital Chat Station, a Kirin 9020 chip and better cameras are likely to be integrated inside, including a new main camera with a variable aperture and a better periscope telephoto lens. The video also shows stylus support, which Huawei may be utilizing to prepare against its impending rival.
Samsung Galaxy Tri-Fold launch at the end of September
Samsung's latest novelty may lure some potential buyers away from Huawei's second tri-foldable device, especially in China and South Korea. Samsung's first double-folding tablet will likely be thicker than the Mate XT series, but thanks to a fully inward-folding design, it will also be more robust in everyday use and is likely to feature a more powerful Snapdragon chipset. Since Samsung will probably forego S Pen support, as with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, stylus operation on the Mate XT is potentially a strategic advantage for Huawei.
According to rumors currently circulating in South Korea and Max Jambor from Germany, the Samsung Galaxy Z Tri-Fold launch will take place on September 29, 2025, as part of a Galaxy Unpacked event in South Korea, possibly alongside an MR headset announced at the end of 2024 under the codename Project Moohan. The price of the Samsung MR headset is expected to be between the equivalent of approximately $1,750 and $2,900, significantly below Apple's price. This is scheduled to launch in South Korea on October 13, with availability in other markets to follow at later dates.
