Huawei Mate XT
The Huawei Mate XT is not just another folding phone as it is a tri-folding marvel, and the first of its kind to hit the commercial market. Initially dismissed by some as a flashy, overpriced gimmick, the Mate XT proves otherwise once experienced firsthand. It delivers what foldables have long promised, a true tablet-sized utility in a pocketable form. The Mate XT’s standout feature is its Z-shaped tri-fold design, which folds twice to go from a compact 6.4-inch form to a sprawling 10.2-inch display, putting it within reach of the iPad 10.9 in screen real estate. Unlike many early foldables that felt fragile or suffered from visible creases, the Mate XT is surprisingly robust, with durable hinges that stay firmly in place at various angles. The creases, while visible, are discreet and on par with the best in the category, such as the Honor Magic V3. When folded, the phone feels manageable and premium. It uses magnetic latches to stay securely shut, enhancing both its form and function. It is a design that feels futuristic yet practical, finally making the foldable form factor feel more like a feature than a compromise. Under the hood, the Huawei Mate XT is equipped with the Kirin 9010 chipset, Huawei’s in-house silicon that pairs with a massive 16GB of RAM. Storage options scale from 256GB to 1TB, making it suitable for power users and multitaskers alike. While real-world performance testing was not possible in a brief hands-on, the spec sheet suggests it can comfortably rival the current top-tier foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and OnePlus Open.
The Mate XT also packs a serious battery setup, a 5,600mAh battery supports 66W wired and 50W wireless SuperCharge. That is definitely a notable improvement over many foldables, which often struggle to balance large screens with all-day battery life. If Huawei’s claims hold true in practice, this phone could set new standards for endurance in foldable devices. Photography has not been sidelined either. The Mate XT includes a triple-lens rear setup with a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide, and a 12MP periscope lens. A front-facing 8MP camera rounds out the offering. While not revolutionary, this setup matches flagship-level expectations and offers versatility for mobile photography on a multi-screen device. Though currently exclusive to China, the Mate XT offers a compelling glimpse into the future of foldables. It’s not just about bending screens anymore, it is about rethinking what a phone can be. With Samsung reportedly working on a tri-folding device for 2025, Huawei may have just ignited the next wave in mobile innovation. While it may be expensive, the Huawei Mate XT is not about affordability, it is about possibility. And for once, the tech feels ready for the real world.

But then comes the mediocre performance, uncertain app future, and lack of Google Mobile Services and a recent Android API support. Plus Huawei has no access to 5G technology outside China. Some of these shortcomings could have been acceptable if the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate did not cost €3,500. If the eye-watering price tag is not enough to scare you away, then most probably nothing else will - the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is the only mainstream trifold smartphone right now and if you want such a device, this is it.

While the Mate X6 positioned itself as a premium yet affordable foldable, the Mate XT is an unparalleled achievement in the ongoing history that is foldable smartphones.

The big shame is that with such an exotic and exciting piece of hardware, it doesn’t have the Google Play Store or Google’s core apps installed out of the box, and that means it can be a faff to get the software you want installed. It’s also ludicrously expensive. But does that matter? Do those facts make this phone any less of a marvel? In my humble opinion, not really.The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is, quite simply, the most ambitious piece of smartphone design I’ve come across in my long years as a technology journalist. It may not be practical but it is a wonder of engineering and product design. Admire it simply for that.

In 2014, Huawei established the Honor subsidiary brand under which certain smartphone lines are sold. The Huawei name is usually not listed for these products.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Qualcomm Maleoon 910: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets, integrated in the HiSilicon Kirin 9000W. Unfortunately, Huawei has not provided any detailed information. What is certain is that it does not support hardware-based ray tracing and only the older Vulkan 1.0 standard.
