The laptop is manufactured with strict build tolerances and high-end materials, which ensures optimal performance without ever sacrificing power. Built with high-end industrial materials like magnesium alloy, one of the lightest structural metals in the world, the Alienware m17 is meticulously designed for performance-driven user experience. Magnesium alloy on the chassis improves rigidity, whereas steel ensures tactile comfort and copper in the thermal module keeps graphics card and processor cool. It can also be paired with the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, which supports the next generation Nvidia and AMD graphics cards and includes an additional 4-port USB 3.0 hub for added peripherals. With a dedicated PCI-Express X4 generation 3 with up to 40 Gbps throughput, users never have to worry about the disadvantages that come with a shared connection. As for cooling, the Alienware Cryo-Tech v2.0 optimizes component cooling to maximize overall performance and keep the laptop cool to the touch. In addition to extraordinary power, the m17 is engineered for amazing battery life with a 60 Wh battery and optional 90 Wh upgrade. Users can access a variety of port options with the Thunderbolt 3 port. 23 percent thinner, 37 percent smaller, and 40 percent lighter. The Alienware m17 addresses all the size and weight complaints of the original Alienware 17 series albeit at the cost of some auxiliary features like the backlit trackpad, per-key RGB lighting, additional ports.

The Alienware m17 really impressed my with how lightweight and easy it was to carry around, while offering a generous 17.3" screen, and stellar performance – all for £2,349. The screen looks fantastic and you'll be able to run AAA titles at max settings without compromise. The only downside is the noise if the fans when they inevitably kick in and the too-hot-to-handle temperature, but as long as you have a pair of headphones and somewhere other than your lap to rest it, it's not too much of a problem. If size matters - even on the go - you can't go wrong with the Alienware m17 and it won't break the bank.

Alienware put a whole lotta laptop into a relatively slim, lightweight package. The m17 comes out of the box swinging with an overclockable Intel Core i9 processor and an Nvidia RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU, which all but guarantees the system will be a powerhouse. Impressive battery life (for a gaming laptop) and a speedy SSD only sweeten the pot, while Alienware's new showstopping Legend design is an emphatic nod to the future. However, $3,579 for our test configuration can make even the most avid gamer pause. To get the most bang for your buck, we recommend opting for the $2,199 config, which gets you a 9th Gen Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a powerful RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU. The $2,999 MSI GS75 Stealth is a slightly more affordable option that's lighter and slimmer than the m17 and has a more vivid display and similar specs. But if you want the very best power and performance, the Alienware m17 is the clear choice.

While the Alienware M17 is relatively man-portable as gaming notebooks go, it alas doesn’t quite resolve the age-old conundrum of middling battery life as all that high-end hardware tends to drain juice fast. If you’re gaming away from the mains, you’ll average less than 3 hours of practical use before you need to find a power plug, making it more appropriate as a gaming desktop replacement.

The Alienware m17 isn't the only laptop fueled by Nvidia's new RTX 20-series. If you're after serious gaming power, you have some options. At this point, there's no clear winner and the "best" laptop will depend on what features are of particular importance to you. With that said, the m17 is a safe bet: It's a powerhouse, its got an inoffensive look and it doesn't make any galling design sacrifices to cram all those premium components into a small(ish) body.

But gamers looking to save some money can get the MSI GS75 Stealth for $1,000 less and still get a machine that's lighter, with a brighter display and faster SSD. Alienware m17 R2-C7XD9
The Alienware m17 R2-C7XD9 is a new gaming laptop with high performance hardware, top notch display and innovative cooling system. At just 2.63 kg (5.8 lb), 18.6 mm thin and 10 % removed from the z-height, the new Alienware m17 is more lightweight and slimmer than the previous m17. Designed from the ground up, the m17 features a premium magnesium alloy chassis based on a new legendary design and high-contrast finish color options including Lunar Light and Dark Side of the Moon. With 8-phase voltage regulation on the Nvidia RTX 2080 Max-Q design graphics and 6-phase voltage regulation on Intel Core i7 and i9HK processors, the new Alienware m17 is hardwired for better efficiency and more sustainable turbo frequencies. This enables longer stretches of GPU and CPU high performance. Taking it to the next level is the GeForce RTX 20xx series, which gives the powerhouse performance, next-generation graphics, and Nvidia technologies like ray tracing, DLSS, and AI-enhanced graphics rendering to take on even the most challenging titles. Besides the performance innovation from hyper-efficient voltage regulation, the new Alienware m17 is engineered to enable Dynamic CPU overclocking on all processor options. The Alienware m17 includes two RAID 0 SSDs. RAID 0 improves transfer rates and so performance. The Advanced Alienware Cryo-Tech v3.0 is engineered to accompany and protect 6-phase CPU voltage regulation and 8-phase GPU voltage regulation, as well as a 32% diameter increase in the CPU fan blades and a 10 % diameter increase in the GPU fan blades of the new m17. In addition, the new m17 offers improved airflow and 25 % less obstruction than Cryo-Tech v2.0 by directly channeling the cooler air onto the most sensitive cores of the system. The new Alienware m17 comes standard with an exceptional FHD display, 72 % color gamut, 300 nits brightness and the thinnest left and right bezels (6.6 mm) among all other 17" Alienware gaming laptops. Despite the slim and lightweight frame, the m17 boasts a 17.3" screen and rapid refresh rate options. The 144 Hz display panel comes with the all new Eyesafe Display Technology. It helps to reduce harmful blue light rays without color distortion. The new keyboard has been built from the ground up and features greater travel (1.7 mm) than the previous m17, RGB per-key AlienFX lighting, N-Key rollover, and anti-ghosting technology. A new precision-point glass touchpad provides a high-quality gaming experience users can feel. As a conclusion, the Alienware m17 R2-C7XD9 features high end specifications, but it does not come cheap. It is suitable for gamers on the go who have the budget for it. Alienware has pulled off something impressive with the m17 R2. It's a relatively slim package that's packing a major punch in performance, and it doesn't look too bad, either. The white soft-touch finish is classy and the keyboard is a dream to type on. The glossy plastic around the screen and speaker grill does look a little cheap, however, and will scratch over time.

The redesigned Alienware m17 R2 crams both a Core i9-9980HK CPU and GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU in the thinnest chassis yet for the venerable series. We had anticipated lukewarm performance to keep thermals in check, but the system surprised us with its faster-than-average speeds even for a high-end gaming laptop.

The Alienware m17 R3 is a beautiful machine and a capable gaming rig, but it's held back by a mix of old and new – old-school battery performance limits your mobility when gaming, and the decision to use high-end Intel hardware didn't quite translate into the sort of performance we expect at this premium pricing tier. Even some of the forward-thinking features had their issues: the Tobii eye tracker, for example, which sounds awesome, but left this reviewer cold, and the trackpad, which had issues with basic fingertip tracking.

The Alienware m17 R4 is the latest addition to Alienware's m17 lineup. Compared to the m17 R3, there's a brand new RTX 3000 graphics card, but the CPU is identical to the predecessor's top configuration. The new 360 Hz display is also currently one of the fastest on the market.

The Alienware m17 R4 is an extremely powerful gaming laptop with an extremely stylish chassis. Easily able to power all the latest AAA games with no compromises, this is the gaming laptop you buy when nothing but the best is acceptable – which means that the price will probably turn some folks off.

Dell, and by proxy Alienware, are master tweakers. The companies never rest on their laurels and are always working to make something better. This time around, it’s the keyboard. By teaming with Cherry, Alienware has widened the game between the Alienware m17 R4 and its challengers. Not only is it ridiculously powerful with its overclockable Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 GPU, but it’s lovely to play games on a gorgeous display with its super-high refresh rate. And now it’s got that extremely clicky, comfortable keyboard. Still, if power is your main concern, you need to check out the Origin Eon17-X where you can customize to your heart’s content, and even use a desktop CPU. However, all that customizability will come at a cost. But if you’re looking for power, a gorgeous panel and clicky, comfortable keys, the Alienware m17 R4 is the laptop for you.

Recommending the Alienware m17 R4 is both easy and difficult for me. As much as I love the idea of having all this gaming performance in a portable and relatively small package, its price veers into "you can get more with a desktop" territory. That feeling is intensified by the laptop's short battery life, which limits its usefulness as a mobile device. I mean, if you're going to be tethered to a power cord anyway, it's just one more reason to get a desktop. On the other hand, the m17 R4 is a complete package -- right down to its clicky Cherry MX mechanical keyboard. It's slim, it looks fantastic and the components will keep your frame rates high for years. If you're looking for something for travel but not to necessarily use between points A and B, it's a fantastic choice. And if you've got no room for a desktop in your life, the choice is even easier.

We really like the look of Alienware's design language with this model as well. The Lunar Light color scheme is gorgeous, and Alienware did a splendid job giving its laptop a distinct look without being tacky. Purists who prefer a completely conservative design might not dig it, but we do—it offers the right amount of gamer bling without falling into gaudy territory. The m17 R4's mechanical keyboard is a high point, too. It's still a low profile keyboard, which seems inescapable in the realm of laptops. But the key action of the Cherry MX switches is far superior to most standard laptop keyboards. All that said, as configured the Alienware m17 R4 is the fastest gaming laptop we've ever tested, and packs several amenities that make this mobile gaming battle station worth serious consideration.

This isn't our favorite overall premium gaming laptop (the latest Razer Blade 15 and the Alienware m15 R4 share that honor), but it is our top recommendation among 17-inch models and thus still seizes Editors' Choice plaudits for that class of machines. That's especially true if you value performance and style above all else in your giant-screen gamer.

The Alienware m17 R4 offers brilliant gaming power, a great screen, impressive connectivity and a top-notch keyboard – but it isn’t perfect. The CPU is beaten by rivals, this machine is heavy, and battery life is poor. It’s an excellent big gaming laptop – but it isn’t infallible, and neither is it cheap.

Lisa Gade reviews the early-mid 2021 refresh of the Alienware M17 R4 17.3” slim gaming laptop with NVIDIA RTX 3060, 3070 and 3080 16GB max mobile wattage GPUs and Intel 8-core i7 and i9 CPU options with vapor chamber cooling. We test the i7 with RTX 3070. There’s a new 360Hz full HD G-Sync display option (our unit) in addition to the existing 144Hz full HD and 4K wide gamut displays. The laptop is available with per key and zone AlienFX backlit RGB keyboards and there’s a new Cherry MX mechanical keyboard option. For those who prefer a smaller size, there’s the similarly spec-d Alienware m15 R4 with higher thermals. In this review we focus on gaming temperatures and fps, internals, benchmarks and the new 360Hz display quality. We did not enable Alienware’s new TCC thermal offset for our tests.

As a gamer, I’m excited to get my hands on the Alienware m17 R5 Ryzen Edition. The amount of power tucked under the hood is extremely impressive and should deliver the kind of AAA gaming experiences I seek. The 17.3-inch screen is another aspect that excites me since I want to see every juicy detail produced by the powerful AMD graphics cards. The only drawback I can foresee with this laptop is the price of higher-end models. $1,599 for the base model alone may be too much for the average gamer. I can only imagine how much beefier rigs will cost. With that said, those who can afford the more expensive models should get their money’s worth. The Alienware m17 R5 Ryzen Edition is clearly a gaming laptop made by gamers, for gamers. It may indeed land in our best gaming laptops of 2022.

If you're looking for a gaming laptop that can more than happily handle demanding creative software and AAA games alike, with distinctive styling and great build quality, but can't quite stretch to the flagship gaming/creative monsters, spending around £2,000/$2,000 on the best-specced Alienware m17 R5 might make a very good investment. Do keep in mind that it's heavy and bulky, so if you're trotting around a lot at work, it might not be for you, but that big, sharp, gorgeous screen more than makes up for it for me.

The Alienware M17 R5 AMD is a powerful gaming laptop at a decent price. It doesn’t deliver quite the graphics punch of its Intel and Nvidia-equipped cousins, but it’s fast enough to run modern games at high resolution. So, it’s a good pick to save some money and still be the envy of the gaming crowd – as long as you aren’t playing one of the games that glitch out on it.

Whether we should give the credit to Alienware or AMD isn’t super-clear in the Alienware m17 R5 AMD Advantage; the former has done an incredible job with design and thermals, while the latter has created a performance package that doesn’t skip a beat. This is a prime laptop for gamers: if you have the money, you need it.

The Alienware M17 R5 is Alienware’s AMD-flavored 17” 2022 gaming laptop with a significantly lower price tag than their Intel-based X17 R2. As ever, there’s plenty of configurable lighting, and optional CherryMX Ultra mechanical keyboard, a healthy selection of ports and your choice of a variety of high refresh rate full HD displays or a wide gamut 4K 120Hz display. It’s available with AMD Ryzen 7 6800H and Ryzen 9 6900HX processors.

The Alienware m17 R5 is a very nicely balanced machine. The optional 4K display offers superb image quality, gaming performance is good, especially at 1080p, and the build quality and styling are absolutely top drawer. Even the battery life is rather impressive. Factor in the rather reasonable price and this burly AMD-powered package shoves many contenders forcefully out of the ring.

So, who should buy this system? We wouldn't recommend the m17 (or any 17" laptop) to folks who are constantly on the go, like students or executive types, but that's really not what the system is meant for anyway. If you're the kind of person who wants "gaming desktop" performance, that's portable, and can't stand having a big box with wires going everywhere, this is the machine for you. It's every bit as fast as a high-midrange gaming desktop, and the price includes an excellent display, too. If you're considering a gaming notebook with a 17" form factor, the Alienware m17 R5 may be for you.

The Alienware m17 R5 doesn't exactly reinvent the R4, but more advanced features and higher performance are what you want from an iterative release. With the x15 and x17 representing slimmer choices among Alienware's offerings, the m17 has room to breathe as the brand's largest and most potent option. It delivers in spades and even adds impressive battery life. Some top-dollar competitors may be faster in certain areas, but the R5 succeeds as a gaming-first machine with sky-high frame rates and plenty of configuration options. Our unit's 175-watt GPU proves its worth if you're a frame-rate-first shopper. It's undeniably pricey, but not more so than its rivals, and the starting price is closer to the midrange. While the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 and Origin EVO17-S are more-than-worthy competitors, the configuration options, style, and raw power of the Alienware m17 R5 earn it an Editors' Choice award for a big high-end gaming laptop that enthusiasts may actually buy, while the MSI GT77 retains its Editors' Choice, too, earned a few days ago, for the ultimate price-regardless dream machine.

Andre 3000 and Big Boi, Salt n’ Pepa and Eric B & Rakim. Now you can add AMD and Alienware to the list of iconic duos. The collaboration has lived up to the hype and did just what they set out to do, create the most powerful 17-inch AMD gaming laptop in the Alienware m15 R5. Both the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX and Radeon RX 6850M XT GPU deliver big numbers on performance, enough to give their Intel and Nvidia-powered competitors a run for their money more often than not. And that’s with no small help from the AMD Advantage software suite designed to squeeze every bit of performance out of the system no matter the situation. The lovely 4K display, powerful speakers, ultra-low profile Cherry MX are the literal cherry on top. Oh and with that Legend 2.0 design, it’s just a stunner of a system. However, for $2,799, I definitely want a 1080p webcam and for the system to be a bit more dominant with that performance. I want to win all the time, not 80% of the exchange.

In the new m17 R5, Dell bets fully on AMD, both for the processor (Ryzen 9 6900HX) and the graphics card (Radeon RX 6850M XT). We take a look at whether the components work well together in the 17-inch gamer and whether the AMD combo can stand up to its Intel/Nvidia rivals.

The Alienware m17 R5 is not an all-around great laptop if you plan to use it for productivity. It's too big and loud to take anywhere, and the disappointing battery life means you'll always have to be plugged in. Combined with a touchpad that's too close to the keyboard, I don't recommend this laptop for work. But this is a gaming laptop, and it doesn't disappoint when it comes to that task. The m17 R5 can play any game in your library, even newer GPU-intensive games, but there are some caveats. Though the 4K display is great for streaming content, don't expect to play many games at that native resolution since the internal specs aren't powerful enough to produce a consistent 60 fps in demanding games.
