Acer TravelMate P243 is available in many Acer reseller stores across the USA right this minute in a couple different iterations. The one we’re using here will cost you right around $999 USD, while a much more conservatively powered iteration with a 2nd Gen i3 processor from Intel will run you around $599.99 USD. That’s the one you want if you only want the basics – don’t expect to do the big tasks there, but traveling around with it will be a perfectly good experience.

Disappointing screen. Acer launches a well-equipped 15.6-inch all-rounder on the market with the TravelMate P259-MG-71UU. The GeForce 940MX graphics core (GDDR5 version) allows playing many up-to-date computer games. Acer ruins the overall good impression with a poor screen and only middling battery life.

Yep, you won’t get a premium treatment when you go for this laptop. Neither the materials of use are slick, nor the body is the thinnest. Don’t even ask about the performance. However, if your daily work mainly consists of working with documents or the Office package of Windows – then this won’t be a problem.

Excluding the aforementioned issues, we had untroubled time with the TravelMate P2 (TMP215-52). Its storage is fast thanks to the NVMe drive support, and you can upgrade it with two RAM sticks (up to 16GB of DDR4 memory). Sadly, because of the weird performance, we weren’t able to test the battery life of the unit, given the fact that the results would have been inaccurate.

At the end of the day, the Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP215-53) is a decent budget offer. This device can be a good daily driver if you pick it with a 4-core CPU like the Core i5-1135G7 or Core i7-1165G7. These CPUs are fast enough for 4K video content and even for some light and casual gaming on Low settings. Our laptop has an Intel Core i3-1115G4 (with two cores and four threads) and Intel UHD Graphics Xe G4 (48EU) and because the memory is in dual-channel mode, it can run some games on Low settings like CS:GO, League Of Legends, Minecraft. So, yes, even with the least power CPU variant, you can play light games after work, if your device has two RAM sticks. Unfortunately, the display is a mixed bag. The 15.6″ 1080p IPS panel (BOE NV156FHM-N48) has comfortable viewing angles and a good contrast ratio but on the other hand, its sRGB color coverage is low and the panel isn’t PWM-free unless you bump the brightness to 100%. Another thing that left us with mixed feelings is the keyboard/touchpad combo – the trackpad is definitely a good unit while we cannot say exactly the same for the keyboard.

We are pleasantly surprised by the overall performance of the Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP214-41). This affordable 14-inch machine has a lot to offer for its modest price tag. The build quality is the usual business for this class – it’s an all-plastic build, the lid can’t be opened with a single hand and you can spot some bends while typing harshly. However, the bezels around the panel are thin enough and the laptop looks up to date. The hardware camera shutter is a nice extra. The display (AUO B140HAN04.0 (AUO403D)) is a decent 14″ 1080p IPS panel. It has comfortable viewing angles, great contrast ratio, and the main advantage is the lack of PWM for brightness adjustment – no matter for what you’re planning to use the device, this will not negatively impact your health and eyesight during prolonged periods of usage. The main con of this display is the narrow color coverage. The Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP215-53) is a decent non-expensive laptop that doesn’t have a lot of downsides. It’s compact, light, the IPS panel has good viewing angles and it is PWM-free

If asked, most users would like the sleekness and portability of an Ultrabook but at an affordable price point. They’re unlikely to get that combination, but they might get a system like the Acer Travelmate P2 and at least feel that its technology is comparable with those more expensive laptops. The Acer Travelmate P2 (TMP215-54), is a general-purpose machine with a powerful processor, NVMe storage, upgradable memory and a good selection of ports. At the volume point in the Acer laptop model, the Travelmate P2 comes in a very wide range of SKUs, starting with Intel Core i3 models. Moving up from the popular I5 machines, Acer also makes Core i7 variants for those that need even more power.

The TravelMate P2 (TMP215-54) is not an eyecatching device. However, the manufacturer has done the best it can to make up for the unimpressive looks. We are talking about a great port selection, including a MicroSD card reader, a Thunderbolt 4 connector, three USB Type-As, and more. Not only that, but the keyboard and the touchpad combination is pretty good. Gone is the small unit from last year, at the expense of a new, bigger one, that is more friendly towards the environment. Acer state that it uses its OceanGlass technology. Essentially, this is plastic, collected or “bound” to the ocean. The optional fingerprint reader and IR face recognition scanner are a great complement to the TPM 2.0 module and the privacy shutter. While Acer still uses 768p TN panels for this machine, we are happy to report that our Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP215-54)’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Its backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, but unfortunately, the screen covers only half of the colors found on the Web. The battery life is good for light Web browsing – 10 hours and 30 minutes. Watching HD videos offline will drain it a bit faster, though – 7 hours and 30 minutes. And if you are working, don’t forget your charger. Inside, you will find two RAM SODIMM slots for up to 32GB of DDR4 memory in dual-channel mode. Also, there is an M.2 PCIe x4 slot for fast SSDs, and a 2.5-inch SATA drive bay. Thankfully, you get mounting accessories inside the box. Generally, this machine has everything to suit all your business needs, with one major flaw – it can’t pour you coffee. If you are willing to do that yourself, and you don’t mind the low-budget build, then this is a great laptop for you.

The Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP216-51) is a surprisingly good laptop. Its build quality is not the best but the device can offer long battery life and great CPU clocks under heavy loads. The cooling solution with just one fan and two heat pipes seems enough for a 28W CPU limit during longer processor stress and that’s a very good result. The Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP216-51) doesn’t cost a lot and it amazes us with its long battery life, high CPU frequencies, and great upgradability.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.
Intel HD Graphics 510: Integrated GPU (GT1) with 12 EUs found on some low-end Skylake CPU models (15 W ULV series).
Intel HD Graphics 610: Integrated GPU (GT1) with 12 EUs found on some low-end Kaby-Lake CPU models (15 W ULV series). Same performance as the old HD Graphics 510.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 940MX: Mid-range laptop graphics card based on the Maxwell architecture. Compared to the older 940M, the MX now also supports GDDR5 graphics memory and maybe slightly faster clock speeds.
NVIDIA GeForce MX230: Pascal (GP108) based entry-level graphics card with GDDR5 graphics memory. Only suited for less demanding games.
AMD Vega 5: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 5 CUs (= 320 shaders) and a clock of up to 1400 MHz.

Intel Core i5:
3210M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 GPU, core clock 2.5 - 3.1 GHz
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
6500U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Pentium:
4405U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 510 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Kaby Lake:
Pentium 4415U: Kaby-Lake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Compared to the Core i3-7100H, the 4415U is clocked slower (2.3 versus 3 GHz), offers less Level 3 cache and a slower GPU. Both a manufactured in the same 14nm process.
Intel Comet Lake:
i7-10510U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced on 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.8 and 4.9 GHz (all 4 cores 4.3 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2666 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default).
AMD Renoir (Ryzen 4000 APU):
R3 PRO 4450U: Mobile Quad-Core APU using four Zen 2 cores clocked at 2.5 to 3.7 GHz and a Vega graphics card with 5 CUs clocked at up to 1400 MHz. The CPU does not support SMT / Hyperthreading. The PRO version of Renoir is offering additional security and management features.
Intel Tiger Lake:
i3-1115G4: Tiger Lake based dual-core processor for thin and light laptops. The two CPU cores are clocked at 3 GHz - 4.1 GHz and the integrated UHD Graphics Xe GPU can run at up to 1.25 GHz.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
16.00:
This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.
17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.6 kg:
3 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
79.45%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
