Atomic Heart launched in 2023 to much fanfare, with critics and fans alike largely praising the game for its fantastic, surreal visuals and slick gameplay and storytelling. The FPS is set in an alternate timeline in a Soviet utopia that has gone awry. It is your job to fend off the menacing mutants and fierce mechanical monstrosities.
For the duration of the current Steam deal, Atomic Heart is discounted by 70% to an all-time low price of $17.99. Its Platinum ProtonDB rating also makes it the perfect companion for the Steam Deck or a Lenovo Legion Go running SteamOS (curr. $729.99 on Amazon).
Atomic Heart gameplay highlights and reviews
Atomic Heart blends an open world and linear storytelling, but still manages to give players an experience that is punchy and fast-paced. You play as agent P-3, an employee of the laboratory researching ground-breaking artificial intelligence and human-machine interface tech — and ground zero of the calamity threatening the utopia. Your job is to clear out the oncoming onslaught of robots and mutants, restore the AI infrastructure, and potentially uncover a deeper conspiracy threatening the peace.
Atomic Heart is one of those rare gaming gems that received near-universal praise, but it stands out for its polished graphics, excellent world-building and character design, and unique story. Aesthetically, Atomic Heart takes inspiration from the BioShock series, although it obviously lacks the steampunk aesthetic, instead opting for a more classic retro-futurism look. At times, Atomic Heart also adds in a healthy dose of horror, for good measure.
By all accounts, Atomic Heart isn't particularly difficult to get into, although it still offers a lot of customisation and progression to delve into, whether it be upgrades to your power glove or adjusting your play style based on new gear looted from the facility. While Atomic Heart hasn't had a perfect track record for reviews, almost every review praises the shooter for its unique visuals and for breaking away from the mould of typical shooter games. At the time of writing, Atomic Heart has a healthy 80% positive review rating on Steam, and, according to SteamDB, it still sees peak daily player counts of over 1,000 players. This is despite launching over two years ago — a rare occurrence for single-player narrative-focussed games.
