Valheim emerged as a breakout hit in 2021, blending sandbox survival gameplay with a world inspired by Norse mythology. Normally priced at around $20, the indie title is now available on Steam at a 50% discount – matching its lowest price so far.

Valheim takes players to the tenth world, hidden within the branches of Yggdrasil, the world tree of Norse mythology. This mysterious realm is a proving ground where fallen Vikings must earn their place in Valhalla. You awaken with nothing in this mystical land, but a raven acting as a divine messenger offers guidance to help you begin.

Valheim does not follow a fixed storyline or set end goal – players define their own pace and priorities. You explore vast, procedurally generated worlds featuring diverse biomes such as forests, swamps, mountains, seas and mist-shrouded lands. Each area offers unique resources and dangers: forests provide wood and game but hide hostile creatures, while silver can be mined in the mountains, though without proper gear the cold proves deadly. Whether building a shelter, crafting weapons or embarking on a voyage, every choice shapes your Viking saga.

At the core of Valheim is a rewarding gameplay loop: build a base, gather resources and challenge the boss of each region. Defeating these powerful foes grants trophies that can be placed at a central altar to unlock permanent buffs. The crafting system allows you to create everything from Viking longhouses and longships to portals for fast travel. While the game can be played solo, it truly shines in co-op with up to ten players. PvP is optional and only enabled when all participants consent, keeping the emphasis on collaboration and exploration.

Surprise hit of 2021

Developed by Iron Gate AB and published by Coffee Stain Publishing, Valheim launched in Early Access in February 2021. Within weeks it sold millions of copies and quickly became one of the most-played games on Steam – a level of success rarely achieved by indie titles outside of highly anticipated releases like Hollow Knight: Silksong. Its popularity is supported by strong reviews: Valheim has over 500,000 user ratings on Steam with an impressive 94% positive. German gaming magazine ComputerBild called it a “sensation” in their review, awarding it a strong score of 1.5 (on a 1.0–6.0 scale, with 1.0 being best).

A specific date for Valheim's full release has not yet been announced. In 2023, the developers stated that the game would remain in Early Access for at least two more years. Based on that timeline, the end of the Early Access phase now seems to be drawing closer.

50% discount on Steam

Valheim normally costs around $20 on Steam, but until September 15 it’s available at a 50% discount, bringing the price down to about $10. According to SteamDB, this matches the game’s lowest recorded price.
