Insurgency: Sandstorm, developed by New World Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, was released in December 2018. This tactical shooter skips a traditional single-player campaign and instead focuses on intense multiplayer combat set in a fictional Middle Eastern conflict zone. For those who prefer cooperation over competition, the game also features a co-op mode where up to eight players can team up against waves of AI enemies.
At the core of Insurgency: Sandstorm are realistic firefights where tactics and communication make all the difference. As in most tactical shooters, the time-to-kill is short – often a single shot is enough to take you down. Unlike larger-scale titles such as Squad or Hell Let Loose, the maps here are more compact, with a strong emphasis on infantry combat in urban environments. This design choice creates a faster pace, intense firefights and a gripping close-quarters atmosphere.
Players can choose from eight classes, including the Breacher, suited for close-quarters combat, and the Gunner, who brings heavy firepower to the fight. The game features more than 40 modern firearms, each customizable with a wide range of attachments and upgrades. Spread across 13 maps, Insurgency: Sandstorm offers diverse environments ranging from snow-covered mountain villages to narrow alleyways and sprawling industrial zones.
In its review, the German gaming magazine GameStar praised Insurgency: Sandstorm for its intense atmosphere, tactical depth and wide variety of weapons. The steady stream of free updates – regularly adding new maps and gear – also received high praise. However, the game was criticized for some unbalanced maps, predictable AI in co-op mode and visuals that do not always meet the standards of more modern shooters. Despite these drawbacks, GameStar awarded the game an impressive 89 out of 100.
Insurgency: Sandstorm also holds up well across other platforms. On Metacritic, it currently has a Metascore of 78 and a User Score of 8.0. The Steam community reflects this positive reception, with more than 128,000 reviews averaging 84% positive.
First-ever 70% discount on Steam
Insurgency: Sandstorm is normally priced at around $30 on Steam, but until September 15 it is available for just under $9 – a 70% discount and the lowest price recorded so far, according to SteamDB. The game is marked as "Playable" on the Steam Deck (available on Amazon for $455), and with a few minor tweaks, it should run smoothly on the go.
