In early 2020, a group of four German and Swiss students decided to try their hand at creating a relaxing game with a minimalist vibe. The result of their efforts was Dorfromantik - a building strategy and puzzle game that draws its inspiration from the old German word for "village romanticization". Thanks to an ongoing sale on Steam, this beautiful game is available with a 60% discount which drops its price down to an all-time low of just $5.99.
Dorfromantik tasks its players with a simple objective - place tiles to create a village landscape that seemingly grows forever. The player is granted a random set of tiles, and each tile must be placed in an appropriate manner to create forests, villages, railways, and more. The game then awards points to the player based on how well the whole thing fits together.
Gamers who simply want a relaxing experience will be quite satisfied with this title, courtesy of the game's inherently chill nature. However, competitive gamers are also likely to have an excellent time chasing higher scores by meticulously placing each tile. Some objectives with precise requirements are also present, such as windmills, which require to be bordered by six fields.
The game follows a well thought-out progression style as well. As the player advances, more objectives start popping up. Upon completion of said objectives, the game unlocks new tiles, and more interesting biomes. Multiple game modes are present, including Classic, Quick, Monthly, and Hard. Classic is arguably the simplest of the bunch, while Hard mode is, obviously, the hardest with more challenging tiles. Quick, on the other hand, grants the player a select number of tiles with the objective of scoring the most points, whereas Monthly, as the name suggests, presents a unique challenge each month.
The game has received tons of praise since its launch, from critics and casual gamers alike. Dorfromantik is rated 96% positively on Steam based on a whopping 14,000 reviews. RockPaperShotgun's review of the title also paints a promising picture of this relaxing game. The game runs very decently on the Steam Deck (curr. $899 on Amazon), which is good news for Deck owners. At its current all-time low price on Steam, Dorfromantik is undoubtedly a great buy for gamers who haven't experienced this title yet.
