Clock Tower: Rewind, an enhanced port of the pioneering survival horror game from 1995, is now $13.99 on Steam as part of a limited-time promotion. The 2024 release marked the first time the 16-bit original was officially translated and released worldwide.

An enhanced port of a legendary cult classic, Clock Tower: Rewind, is now $13.99 on Steam as part of a limited-time promotion. The pioneering 1995 16-bit classic, released only in Japan for the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), is lauded for establishing many of the tropes in gaming's Survival Horror genre.

It's a point-and-click adventure game where the main gameplay loop revolves around hiding and escaping from enemies, instead of fighting them. You have limited resources and must solve puzzles to advance the narrative.

What does the Rewind port add?

The port adds several features like a new animated intro, completely redone and voice-acted motion comics, new border artwork, and restored content from the PlayStation port of the game.

You can play the game in Original mode or in the new Rewind mode, which includes bug fixes, a new chase system that allows the enemy AI to follow you around in more rooms and hiding places, better controls for smoother gameplay, new weapons, and tons of quality-of-life improvements aimed at making the experience more enjoyable.

The game's story has also been expanded upon with new rooms and restored content from the original release. You play as a teenage orphan named Jennifer, adopted along with three of her friends, who finds herself in a mysterious mansion being stalked and pursued by a serial killer named Scissorman.

The game takes heavy inspiration from Italian Giallo horror films (mainly directed by Dario Argento), including many of the same tropes, such as a striking use of color and homages to many set-pieces found in films such as Suspiria, Inferno, and Opera.

The Rewind port is a great way to experience the tense, claustrophobic atmosphere of the original without the clunky controls. It offers a unique gameplay experience for fans of classic horror or new players exploring the roots of the Survival Horror genre.

The promotion ends on September 11.
