A new leak has hinted at two upcoming CPUs from AMD, the Ryzen 7 9750X and a Ryzen 5 9650X. These reportedly feature minor upgrades over the 9700X and 9600X, in line with a CPU refresh.

It looks like AMD want’s to share the ‘new CPU launch’ limelight with Intel following the latter’s Arrow Lake-S desktop additions. New information for a leaker suggests that Team Red is working on releasing two refreshed CPUs to expand its Ryzen 9000 series portfolio, and they are expected to come with incremental upgrades over their currently available counterparts.

chi11eddog has shared on X some key details about a Ryzen 7 9750X and a Ryzen 5 9650X. As the names suggest, these will be bring improvements over the Ryzen 7 9700X and the Ryzen 5 9600X. Starting with the Ryzen 7 9750X, it is said to feature an eight core16 thread configuration with 32 MB L3 cache. The boost and base clock speeds are said to be 5.6 GHz and 4.2 GHz respectively. As for the Ryzen 5 9650X, this CPU is said to carry a six core 12 thread configuration with 32 MB L3 cache and clock speeds of 5.5 GHz/4.3 GHz. Both are said to have a 120W TDP.

Here’s how they compare to the Ryzen 7 9700X and the Ryzen 5 9600X:

CPU Core config Boost clock speed Base clock speed L3 Cache TDP
Ryzen 7 9750X 8C/16T 5.6 GHz 4.2 GHz 32 MB 120W
Ryzen 7 9700X 8C/16T 5.5 GHz 3.8 GHz 32 MB 65W
Ryzen 5 9650X 6C/12T 5.5 GHz 4.3 GHz 32 MB 120W
Ryzen 5 9600X 6C/12T 5.4 GHz 3.9 GHz 32 MB 65W

As you can see, the new chips have slightly higher boost clock speeds, significantly higher TDPs, but the same amount of L3 cache. The higher TDPs makes sense since the base clock speeds seem to have gone up a bit. As to how this would translate into real world performance gains, remains to be seen.

What’s more interesting is the naming convention and AMD going with a new 9000 series number like the 9850X3D rather than an ‘XT’ suffix which is typical with its CPU refreshes. These come in response to Intel’s latest Core Ultra 7 270K/KF Plus and Core Ultra 5 250K/KF Plus CPUs. Intel also recently refreshed two of its laptop Core Ultra 200 series SKUs, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and the Core Ultra 9 270HX Plus.

It should be noted that AMD has not shared any information on the rumored CPUs so take this with a grain of salt. It is also unclear when these rumored CPUs will hit the market.
