3D models from real-world environments: Xgrids presents Portalcam for film studios, architects, game developers and more

Wouldn't it be great to preserve memories such as your own wedding not just as two-dimensional photos or videos, but entirely in 3D, including the surrounding environment and the people in it? Wouldn't it be useful for game developers to capture real-world environments in 3D in a relatively short amount of time instead of spending many hours creating artificial 3D models? And wouldn't it add real value if architects and real estate agents could let clients virtually walk through properties rather than simply showing them photos?
That's exactly what Xgrids' spatial camera, called Portalcam, is designed to make possible. The device features two front-facing cameras, a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor, and a SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) system. The cameras capture everything in view, while LiDAR measures distances. SLAM combines the data, uses it to create a map, and continuously matches that map to the camera's position.
The result is a 3D model of the surrounding environment. Xgrids also offers LCC Studio software, which processes the camera data into 3D models. The photorealistic models are already dimensionally accurate, making them ready for virtually any workflow. The software then makes the models available for a range of platforms, including web browsers, VR headsets, 3D software such as Blender, 3D printers, and more.
The Portalcam isn't exactly inexpensive, though. The standard package already costs $4,499 and includes a battery, a smartphone mount, and a tripod. Some retailers already offer the device from €3,799, including the store laserscanning-europe.com. Even more expensive is the Premium Package, which costs $6,399 and includes two batteries and a premium license for LCC Studio.
