Finally, Open Gate recording? Nikon announces firmware version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR

But alongside its more than respectable specs, the entry-level filmmaking camera has also drawn some criticism from users. Until now, Open Gate recording was not available, while its stabilization also lags somewhat behind the competition.

Nikon is now addressing some of these criticisms with a new firmware version 2.00. In an effort to respond to customer concerns with potential solutions—and perhaps convince additional prospective buyers to purchase the camera—Nikon has already announced what will be included in the next firmware update. According to the current plan, version 2.00 is scheduled to arrive by the end of the year.

One of the features requested by many customers is Open Gate recording, meaning the ability to read out the entire 3:2 sensor area when recording and then manually crop the footage to 16:9 or even a vertical format during the editing process. Open Gate provides significantly more flexibility when editing footage and makes it easier to adapt content for TikTok, YouTube, or other platforms and preferred aspect ratios. However, the feature will apparently not be included in the upcoming version. Nikon says Open Gate and a desqueeze display are planned to be integrated into the ZR's firmware in 2027.

Definitely part of version 2.00 is support for Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB in the H.265 video file format. This is intended to improve color grading in H.265 while keeping file sizes as small as possible.

There is also new noise reduction at high ISO settings, likewise in H.265 Log mode. In addition, a focus peaking display will now be available when recording in the R3D NE1 video file format. The remote-control application RED CONTROL and its Pro version are not entirely new, but they are also being updated.

It is good to see manufacturers continuing to work on camera firmware and adding features that were not previously available. However, the fact that an Open Gate function will probably not arrive until next year is somewhat disappointing and will certainly be frustrating for customers who have been eagerly waiting for it. After all, some competing cameras already offer the feature.
