Samsung finally supports seamless Android updates: Galaxy A55 5G is among the first to receive new feature
In 2016, Google introduced a new Android feature called "Seamless Updates" - this function allows an Android update to be installed on a second partition in the flash memory while the smartphone can continue to be used. Although you have to restart your phone to complete the installation, the period during which the device cannot be used is significantly shorter.
While most manufacturers of Android smartphones have supported this feature for years, Samsung has so far only claimed to be working on support for seamless updates. After eight years, this work is finally bearing fruit because, as Sammobile has noticed, the Android security update from March 2024 with the version number A556EXXS1AXC1 for the Galaxy A55 5G is the first patch for a Samsung smartphone to be installed via Android seamless updates. This is easy to recognize because two progress bars now appear in the settings, one for "Download and Install" and one for "Verify".
It is not clear whether seamless updates will also be added to older Samsung smartphones such as the Galaxy S24 Ultra (approx. 1060 euros on Amazon). As a rule, the second partition on the flash memory, which is required for the installation of seamless updates, must already be configured ex-works, but it is conceivable that Samsung will find a software solution to this problem. In any case, future Samsung smartphones should support the new, faster update process.
