January 2, 2025 Update: According to leaker HXL on X, the 3DMark Time Spy score of the RTX 5060 laptop GPU is fake. So, take the information and, by extension, the conclusions drawn with extreme caution. The original story continues below.
CES 2025 is just around the corner, and with it comes the announcement of new RTX 50 and RDNA 4 GPUs. At the moment, we expect to see Nvidia debut the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 desktop cards at the event. We can also see Team Green unveil some RTX 50 laptop variants, as CES is the time when laptop makers like MSI unveil new gaming machines based on the latest hardware from Intel, AMD, and Nvidia.
If and when the next-gen gaming laptops arrive, gamers can be sure that the new RTX 50 laptop cards will bring some notable performance uplifts to the table. To that end, a 3DMark Time Spy benchmark result of the RTX 5060 laptop GPU has now surfaced on Bilibili and it is quite convincing.
RTX 5060 laptop GPU performance
The RTX 5060 laptop reportedly scores 13,821 points in the 3DMark Time Spy Graphics test. Per our database, the RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 laptop GPU score a maximum of 11,451 and 13,391, respectively. This puts the RTX 5060 laptop board under question 21% and 3% faster than the fastest RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 laptop models we’ve tested.
Moreover, since we don’t know the TGP the RTX 5060 laptop is running at, we can’t say anything certain about the final performance. The RTX 5060 laptop card can be even faster if the tested model is not allowed the reported full 115 W TGP.
So, the RTX 5060 laptop is shaping up to be quite a decent uplift over the RTX 4060 laptop board without consuming any more power. However, this performance might not be enough for some games as Nvidia is, once again, outfitting the card with only 8 GB of VRAM.
RTX 5060 laptop is an 8 GB GPU and that is a problem
8 GB VRAM is already proving to be a major bottleneck in the latest AAA titles. The RTX 5060 laptop having only 8 GB of VRAM doesn’t bode well for the longevity of gaming machines utilizing the card.
Moreover, the presence of 8 GB of memory on the mobile RTX 5060 laptop also points to the desktop RTX 5060 featuring the same amount of memory. Nvidia launching a next-gen desktop GPU in 2025 that is expected to cost more than $300 at launch with only 8 GB of VRAM would be a disappointing sight to see. This is especially true now, since we know, thanks to the Arc B580, that Nvidia can, if it wants to, launch a sub-$300 card with 12 GB of VRAM.
Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long to find out Nvidia’s plans for the RTX 50 series, as CES is almost upon us.
