Nintendo Switch 2 specs should enable improved performance in graphically demanding titles. However, it doesn't appear that the console will be an upgrade for customization junkies. While Switch games won't boot without a day-one update, unboxing videos have shown the console's menus. Unless a patch at launch adds options, gamers can only choose from light and dark mode themes.
In one of several Switch 2 leaks circulating on Reddit, gamers can see the handheld's customization potential. Under the Themes section in System Settings, a brief list includes Basic Light Mode and Basic Dark Mode. The discovery disappoints fans of personalization, but it also isn't surprising. Nintendo Soup reported that only two Switch 2 themes would be available on its release date.
The inability to personalize the original Switch was a sore spot for some gamers. Nintendo didn't add dark mode to the handheld until 2022, five years after its debut. Critics point to the 3DS, which offered the ability to alter its Home Menu background, icons, and sounds. Other gamers spend as little time as possible on menus and would prefer Nintendo focus on performance enhancements.
Dark modes improve readability but often don't add a distinctive look to PCs or smartphones. Fortunately, there are reports that additional styles may arrive in future updates. The firmware spotted in unboxing videos is older than what the console uses in Nintendo Today! feature previews. The Switch 2 Stock Alerts X account predicted that a launch day update could implement more themes. Some choices would be exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online members or be redeemable with Platinum Points.
The fact that Nintendo bothered to create a Themes menu for two selections also gives players hope. Still, the Nintendo Today! app has yet to showcase any different looks in its many videos.
