Apple reveals it paid ~US$60 billion to developers in 2021
Now that 2022 is in full swing, Apple has released a summary of its services and how they have "enriched" lives during the previous year. This includes claims that the developers who make apps for its systems made about US$60 billion in revenue over the 12 months just gone. The Cupertino giant was more cagey about what it made itself, besides hinting at record takings over the winter holiday and New Year.
Apple may be best known for its iPhones, Macs and MacBooks; however, it has emphasized the importance of its proprietary software, its Arcade gaming service, TV app, Music platform and others such as Fitness+ included, to its multi-billion-dollar business more than once. Now, its latest press release heaps praise on these aspects of its ecosystem and how they "enriched users’ lives" during 2021.
The Cupertino giant also asserted that developers also benefitted from this apparently unparalleled success throughout the same year. Apple now claims that they have made a total of US$260 billion since the launch of the App Store in 2008. Subtract the previous grand total cited at the end of 2020, and this leaves ~$60 billion for the whole of 2021.
This is the point at which the OEM would reveal its own takings or profits; however, Apple has as ever been much more circumspect about its own takings. On the other hand, the company now asserts that its users spent "more than ever before" on its App Store between Christmas and New Year of 2021.

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
