Apple releases iPadOS 15.2.1 and iOS 15.2.1 to address a long-standing security flaw for both operating systems
Apple has started distributing new versions of iPadOS and iOS to eligible devices globally. Like iOS 15.1.1, iPadOS 15.2.1 and iOS 15.2.1 are incremental updates aimed at squashing a few bugs. According to Apple, the updates address the following issues:
iPadOS 15.2.1
- Messages may not load photos sent using an iCloud Link
iOS 15.2.1
- Messages may not load photos sent using an iCloud Link
- Third-party CarPlay apps may not respond to input
Additionally, the two OS updates fix a security flaw, CVE-2022-22588. As shown below, the CVE relates to a vulnerability that will crash iPad and iOS devices that receive a HomeKit invitation with a maliciously crafted HomeKit accessory name. Reportedly, Apple has known about the doorLock flaw since August 2021 but has avoided fixing it until now.
Please note that both updates are rather larger downloads, despite the minor changes that they contain. For example, iOS 15.2.1 is nearly a 1 GB download. For some reason, Apple has not included a changelog for either update. For reference, iPadOS 15.2.1 and iOS 15.2.1 are available on the following devices:
- iPad 5th generation or later
- iPad Air 2 or later
- iPad mini 4 or later
- iPad Pro (all models)
- iPod Touch (7th Gen)
- iPhone 6s or later
