The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max launched as markedly light Apple mobile flagships thanks to their new titanium-infused construction. However, their 16-series successors are now tipped to backslide in these terms in 2024, thanks to a switch to larger displays in both the Pro and Pro Max models.

The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are projected to launch with series-first 6.27-inch and 6.85-inch displays respectively, as opposed to the by-now predictable ~6.1-inch and ~6.7-inch options of previous generations. However, those hoping that Apple would somehow fit those enlarged screens into otherwise unchanged footprints might be disappointed, according to a new MacRumors report.

The blog asserts that the iPhone 15 Pro's successor will get 0.85 millimeters (mm) thicker and 0.3mm wider, with a new 149.6 x 71.45mm front panel for 2024. Similarly, the 15 Pro Max is now believed to be 0.88mm thinner and no less than 3.1mm shorter than its 163 x 77.58mm replacement.

Those might sound like slim enough deltas on paper; then again, those fractions of millimeters can translate to considerable variations in the real-world new smartphone experience on all kinds of levels - as OnePlus has recently reminded us.

Furthermore, the alleged iPhone screen upgrades are also tipped to have a knock-on effect on the strides made by Apple's first-gen titanium smartphones in terms of device weight. The iPhone 16 Pro is now said to gain 7 grams (g) on the 187g 15 Pro, whereas the 16 Pro Max might be 4g heavier than its 221g predecessor.

Again, those new figures might sound negligible, yet have the potential to push the 2024 iPhones back toward conventional smartphone territory, particularly the Pro Max. Then again, both flagships are also now projected to stick with the exact same 8.25mm thickness of their forebears.

Nevertheless, these new specs remain the stuff of rumor for now, although they are also said not to translate to the upcoming vanilla 16 and 16 Plus.
