Zelda: Ocarina of Time suggests Majora's Mask will see a Switch 2 remake

Although the Ocarina of Time remake release date just passed, fans are already looking ahead. Players have spotted subtle hints in character designs and dialogue pointing to a modernized Majora's Mask. Nintendo has also teased more Zelda 40th Anniversary announcements and Switch 2 remakes.
The two Zelda games are Linked
Evidence for a Majora’s Mask remake isn’t conclusive, but WhiteTigerDoll believes it’s inevitable. The original N64 title appeared in 2000, two years after the Ocarina of Time launch. Nintendo then followed up the 2011 3DS port of Ocarina by reintroducing Majora’s Mask in 2015. The speed of development benefited from the projects sharing assets.
The gaming giant made changes in the latest Ocarina of Time that may not be coincidental. The Happy Mask Salesman now has more of an influence on the narrative. Notably, he wears the golden bracelets recognizable from the next mainline Zelda game.
Less convincing, the Skull Kid explains he longs for a face covering. While he could be referring to the Majora’s Mask item itself, Link also collects a Skull Mask for the character.
The Ocarina of Time remake borrows gameplay mechanics from the subsequent entry in the series. When visiting towns and dungeons, time advances rather than being locked to the alternating days and nights of the N64 classic. This system is reminiscent of the constantly progressing clock in Majora’s Mask.
The celebration goes on
During a financial update, Nintendo confirmed the Zelda 40th Anniversary will continue into 2027. Along with The Legend of Zelda movie premiering in April, fans can expect fresh music and merchandise. However, the statement also mentions “games” instead of “game,” sparking hopes of another Switch 2 title.
Despite similarities with Ocarina, a full-fledged Majora’s Mask remake may not surface next year. Still, the Zelda franchise remains essential to Nintendo’s strategy. Senior VP of Product Development and Publishing Nate Bihldorff recently told Polygon that it will balance revisiting older titles with new Switch 2 projects.
