N64 classic GoldenEye 007 receives an unofficial PC port

A byproduct of the growing use of AI in software engineering and other development tasks is the rise of decompilation projects. These projects aim to reverse-engineer classic games, often shipped as binaries or machine code, into open-source projects in high-level languages. This preserves the game for current and future generations while adding modern features like higher frame rates, ultrawide screen support, etc.
Many decompilation projects are ongoing, and fans can learn whether their childhood favorite is part of those plans with a simple Google search. Many retro game fans will be pleased to hear that the legendary Nintendo 64 classic GoldenEye 007 has recently been decompiled, with a PC port launched yesterday by James Dansereau.
The unofficial PC port runs the entire 21-mission single-player campaign at a stable 60 FPS, with no audio glitches or bugs. The campaign was tested on the Agent difficulty level and has been reported to be “crash-free”. The game works on both Windows and Linux, so Steam Deck users can enjoy it too. The port also includes the current dual-stick controller layout and mouse controls as quality-of-life features. The GitHub page for the port credits its creation to the compilation efforts of “KholdFuzion”.
More improvements to come
More improvements are already in progress, such as support for high-resolution textures. However, the current list of included features is already quite extensive; MSAA, texture filtering, frame caps, a FOV/draw distance slider, and more are included. Fans of the game may be disappointed to learn that multiplayer is unavailable, though the team is working to make it functional.
To play the port, like all decompilation projects, players must provide their own ROMs of the original N64 GoldenEye 007. Furthermore, this port requires specifically the US release version in a “.z64” ROM dump format.
However, this is not the only porting project for GoldenEye 007. KholdFuzion and several others are working on their own ports. In addition, a recompilation of the leaked Xbox 360 port of GoldenEye 007 is also available on parts of the internet. But based on feedback in the Reddit thread for this project, it does a great job and provides a more-than-satisfactory experience.
